Once inside the outer pier keep mid channel for half a cable and after the channel turns slightly south the best water is on the south side of the channel all the way up to the marina. Beware of a sand bank which extends from the disused wooden jetty on the north side of the harbour to about mid channel - keeping south close to the fishing boats moored against the harbour wall will keep you clear.

Approaching the Marina

Amble harbour is actually known as Warkworth Harbour and makes a great base for exploring the fabulous beaches and scenary of Northumberland. Local cruising highlights include:

  • Newton Haven (anchorage)
  • Farn Islands (anchorage in "the kettle")
  • Holy Island (anchorage)

Weather

Amble is on the East coast of England and therefore winds with some westerly component usually give rise to the best sailing conditions. Strong northerly or easterly winds can produce rough conditions and make the harbour entrance dangerous. High pressure in the summer can result in costal fog (known locally as see fret or haar).

Sources for weather reports:

  • Inshore Forecast for Berwick Upon Tweed to Whitby
  • Shipping Forecast for Tyne
  • Costal Forecast for Berwick Upon Tweed to Whitby
  • VHF: The coastguard broadcasts a forecast approximately every 4 hours after first announcing the channel to use on VHF 16

Navigation

The light house on Coquet Island (Fl(3) WR.30s 25m 21/16 Horn (1) 30s) lies approximately 1nm ESE of the entrance to Amble.

The simplest approach is from Alnmouth Bay to the north of the harbour, taking care to avoid a shallow area called Pan Bush (depth 0.9 meters) by keeping the light on the north pier (Fl.G.6s 12m 6M) on a bearing of between 190T and 225T.

When approaching from the south, care should be taken to avoid Hauxley Head which lies south of Coquet Island and extends 0.6nm offshore. The white sector of Coquet Island light house indicates you are clear of Hauxley Head. Keep at least 3 cables east and then 6 cables north of Coquet Island before heading west into Alnmouth Bay and following the northern approach, taking care to avoid Pan Bush.

Alternatively in calm conditions and with sufficient height of tide the unmarked channel between Coquet Island and Amble can be taken by keeping the light on Amble North Pier (Fl.G.6s 12m 6M) on a bearing of 300T. This line will take you over Podler Ware Spit (depth 0.9 meters) after which you should make for the port hand marker can and then harbour entrance, taking care to ensure that any southerly current across the harbour entrance does not carry you onto Pan Rocks to the south east of the entrance.

See Amble Tide Tables.

Amble Harbour Entrance

The harbour entrance has charted depth of 0.6 meters but this varies depending on silting and dredging. Only approaching when you have sufficient depth for the Marina (0.8 meters above chart datum) gives a reasonable margin unless conditions are particularly bad. If waves are breaking on Pan Bush then the entrance is considered dangerous and Blyth or River Tyne should be considered as alternative harbours.
