Ammoudia is a less well visited bay, perhaps due to its sleepy nature. It lies on the Ionian coast of Greece, five miles SE of Parga, at the mouth of the Acheron river. The river is navigable by small to medium sized yachts up to the town, where it is also possible for a yacht of shallow to moderate draft to moor. Space is tight in the river, and a yacht of much over 12 metres would find turning round quite a challenge, especially with any wind. The beaches are clean, and shade is to be found in the wooded areas immediately behind them, while the southern reaches of the river are usually full of campers and caravanners.

The River Acheron forms the largest part of the attraction of this little town. Its waters are crisp and cool - very cool, in fact - and great to swim in. The wildlife upstream makes it worth taking a tender up against the current; alternatively, take an easy kayaking trip with the local company there. Motor boats along the quayside also do river trips, but these are short since the river is blocked to larger vessels by fallen trees.

Weather

In summer the weather conditions are typical for the northern Ionian. The early morning is usually calm. At about 11:00 the first light wind starts to blow from the NW into the bay, increasing as the afternoon passes and then dying away again in the evening.

Navigation

No real difficulties with entering the bay, although the white horses caused by wind against current in anything over NW force 4 are somewhat disconcerting (the mouth of the Acheron river experiences a fair swell, combined with a downstream current of about 1.5 knots). This combination makes for some unpredictable handling, so a little speed is advised to enter safely. There are shallows immediately to the south as you enter. There are no real navigation lights, however the breakwater is well lit all the way up to the town. A night entry/exit is not advised.

The Acheron River is navigable by yachts of moderate draft, and moorings alongside the town can be found. Alternatively raft up against one of the more permanent vessels.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

None.

Anchorages

For protection from the prevailing winds and waves, anchor at a depth suitable for your craft as far north in the bay as possible. The usual summer weather will bring a near calm in the bay at night. Holding is good in sand.

  • A nice quiet anchorage, with an interesting opportunity to take your yacht into a river. The cold river water brings welcome relief in the hot summer months, and will act to cool your yacht down too. BenPikeUK
