Arbatax Port of Entry
| |
The harbour of Arbatax is situated on the E coast of the island of Sardinia, four miles S of Santa Maria Navarrese and 35 miles N of the harbour of Porto Corallo. Primarily a commercial and fishing port, a small marina, Marina di Arbatax, has been established on the S side of the harbour. The marina provides around 80 berths on a series of pontoons for yachts up to 30.0 metres and in depths of up to 9.0 meters.

Communication
Also see World Cruiser's Nets.
The harbour is clearly identifiable from some distance in the approach from N by the rocky promontory on which it sits. In the approach from S the small airport at Tortoli immediately before the promontory is conspicuous. The harbour is on the N side of the promontory and is entered along the line of the longer, E breakwater to avoid the shallower water towards the beach. Depths in the entrance are 11.0 metres and up to 9.0 metres on the pontoons.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs
Marina di Arbatax offers around 80 berths for yachts up to 30 metres and maximum draft of 9.0 metres. Berths are stern or bows-to on a series of pontoons and associated quays. Water at all berths, check that it is potable as some berths need a special water adapter from the office; some berths may not have electricity. Toilets. Travel lift (200T) and fixed crane (30T). Most repairs possible. Call marina on VHF Channel 9.
Anchorages
In S winds, it is possible to anchor off the beach NW of the harbour entrance in 5.0 - 5.8 metres. The holding is good in sand. Exposed from N-SE
In N winds, there is a good anchorage in sand in Porto Frailis, a small bay on the S side of the peninsula, half a mile due S of the harbour. Exposed from SE-SW

Tourism
The settlement of Arbatax is not particularly well endowed with historic sights. Much of the harbour is occupied by a commercial shipyard which manufactures oil and gas drilling rigs. There is a good view from the lighthouse tower at the top of the town. The red rock formations around the coast are popular with tourists.
Arbatax is also one terminus for a tourist train that runs into the hills, the Green Train. This trip leaves around 08.00, arrives in the mountains around 13.30, leaves again at 15.30 returning to Arbatax around 21.00.
