The harbour of Bakar

The town of Bakar lies at the NW end of the Bakarski Zaljev (bay of Bakar), a two-mile long inland basin situated four miles SE of the commercial port of Rijeka on the mainland coast of Croatia and two miles N of the island of Krk. While the approaches to the town are heavily industrialized and not particularly attractive, the town itself is a mediaeval gem, climbing up the wooded slopes at the head of the bay. There are no designated facilities for yachts, which must find a berth along its quays among the local vessels. Depths range from 4.0 metres to under one metre, so care is needed when choosing a spot to berth. Shelter is reasonable in most conditions, although fierce gusts will be experienced in a bora and Bakar would probably be untenable in a strong scirocco in view of the two mile fetch in SE winds.

Navigation

The industrial installations at the entrance to Bakarski Zaljev are very conspicuous, especially the tall chimney with red and white painted bands on the NW side of the entrance. A green buoy to starboard on entry marks a shallow bank extending some 400 metres NW from the SE side of the entrance. Once through the entrance, a course NW along the centre of the bay avoids some rocky patches close inshore.

Berthing

The NW end of the bay is quayed along its entire length, but depths are variable. Visiting yachts need to use their anchors to moor bow or stern-to the quays wherever there is space among the local boats. Depths are greatest (around 4.0 metres) on the NW side of the bay. The holding is good in mud. There is a small boat harbour at the SW end of the bay, but it is invariably filled with local boats and depths are in any case too shallow for most yachts. Shelter in the bay is good in most conditions, although there are strong gusts in a bora. Bakar would probably be untenable in a strong scirocco in view of the two mile fetch in SE winds. Better shelter in these conditions may be found in Kraljevica.

Anchorages

It is possible to anchor off in the centre of the bay in 7.0 - 8.0 metres, clear of the moorings. Holding is good in mud.
