Ports, Anchorages, and Islands

The bay contains numerous islands, notably the active volcano Whakaari / White Island, which lies 50 kilometres from the coast in the eastern bay. Other large islands include (from west to east) Matakana Island, Mayor Island / Tuhua, Motiti Island, and Moutohora Island.

White Island

Whakaari/White Island is an active andesite stratovolcano, situated about 50 NM from Tauranga. It is New Zealand’s most active cone volcano, and has been built up by continuous volcanic activity over the past 150,000 years.

White Island is privately owned. Visitors cannot land without permission or remove or disturb any wildlife and must leave only their footprints. However, it is easily accessible by authorised tourist operators.

The waters surrounding White Island are well known for their fishing. Yellowtail kingfish abound all year round, and there is deep water fishing for hapuka and bluenose (a type of warehou) in the winter and blue, black and striped marlin and yellowfin tuna in the summer.
