Local chartlet

The hamlet of Blace and its associated anchorage are situated in the Neretvanski Kanal, the channel between the mainland and the Peljesac Peninsular on the Adriatic coast of Croatia. The settlement lies two miles SE of the entrance to the Neretva River, the largest river in the Adriatic. The surroundings here are idyllic, but the entrance to the anchorage has depths of only 2.5 metres and it is therefore only suitable for relatively shallow draft yachts and in settled weather.

Local Weather

Diurnal winds along the coast are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains are a feature of some of the harbours along the NE Adriatic coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the Velebitski channel. It tends to blow less strongly S of Zadar.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

For sources of weather forecasting, see Croatia.

Approach and Navigation

In the approach from N, it is important to give a good clearance to the shallows extending nearly a mile off the mouth of the Neretva River two miles NW of Blace. The anchorage is partly protected by two small islands, the larger of which, Otocic Skoljic, has a light structure on top. The entrance channel is to the E of Otocic Skoljic and care is needed since, although the channel has depths for much of its length of 5.0 - 6.0 metres, there is only 2.5 metres immediately E of the island.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)

Once past the island, it is possible to anchor in deeper water between it and the short pier extending off the village to the NNE. The depths here are 6.0 - 7.0 metres and the holding is excellent in mud. It may be possible for a yacht drawing under 2.0 metres to lie alongside the short pier if there is space. Depths here range from 2.0 metres at the root to 3.0 metres at the end. It is not possible to proceed past the pier and into the lagoon behind owing to limited depths and overhead cables.
