Cannigione

Cannigione is a small harbour at the head of the Gulf of Arzachena in Sardinia, some ten miles due south of Isola Caprera in the Maddalena group of islands. It offers secure marina berths at a rather more reasonable cost than the glitzy marinas of the Costa Smeralda.

Cannigione is also a good base for exploring some of the impressive Nuraghic remains around Arzachena.

Charts

British Admiralty 1992 - 1:300,000 Portovecchio to Arbatax including Bonifacio Strait

1213 - 1:50.000 Bonifacio Strait

Imray M8 - 1:255,000 North Sardegna

Weather

The Gulf of Arzachena offers good all-round shelter from all directions except north. Gusts are possible from any direction in the approaches to Cannigione in view of the high land to either side.

Passages

Popular passages/routes, timing, etc.

Islands

The main islands of the Maddalena group, Isola Caprera, Isola Santo Stefano and Isola La Maddalena, lie six miles to the north.

Communication

Navigation

Approach is straightforward up the Gulf of Arzachena, although strong northerlies make berthing difficult in a crosswind.

Berthing

The harbour of Cannigione is protected by an L-shaped breakwater. The berth is the harbour belong to a number of concessions.

Sardamar is probably the main berthing option in the harbour.

Gulf of Arzachena

There are several good anchorages in the bay.

NE of Cala Bitta/wiki/Cannigione#NE_of_Cala_BittaAnchorage icon NE of Cala Bitta [[Cannigione#NE of Cala Bitta|NE of Cala Bitta]] 41°07.903'N, 009°27.967'E is one of the most popular in the deep bay just north of Cala Bitta at the NE corner of the gulf. Shelter here is good as long as there is nothing west in the wind. The bottom is weedy and you may need several attempts to get your anchor to hold.

Transportation

Tourism

Cannigione is a secure spot to leave your yacht for a tour of some of the interesting Nuraghic remains for which the Arzachena area is renowned, especially the fortified dwelling of Nuraghe Malchittu, with its unusual passage construction; the ‘giants’ tombs’ of Coddu Ecchiu and Li Lolghi and the necropolis of I’Muri (which features Neolithic box tombs with concentric circles and stelae). Other locations worth visiting include the village of Luogosanto, nestling on top of a mountain, and the impressively sited village of Aggius, wedged between huge piles of solid granite. From there, one can continue through the Valle della Luna, an amazing gorge flanked by massive pillars of solid granite.
