Cannigione is a small harbour at the head of the Gulf of Arzachena in Sardinia, some ten miles due south of Isola Caprera in the Maddalena group of islands. It offers secure marina berths at a rather more reasonable cost than the glitzy marinas of the Costa Smeralda. It is also a good base for exploring some of the impressive Nuraghic remains around Arzachena.

Local Weather

The Gulf of Arzachena offers good all-round shelter from all directions except north. Gusts are possible from any direction in the approaches to Cannigione in view of the high land to either side.

Approach and Navigation

Approach is straightforward up the Gulf of Arzachena, although strong northerlies make berthing difficult in a crosswind.

Berthing Options

The main berthing option is the marina of Cannigione. Call on channel 9. Telephone: +39 (0)789 88422.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

The marina of Cannigione consists of a series of floating pontoons protected by an L-shaped breakwater. The pontoons have a total of around 400 berths and can accommodate yachts of up to 30 metres. Depths range from 4.0 metres at the head of the pontoons to as little as 0.5 metres inshore. Fuel station. Water and electricity on the pontoons. Toilets and showers. Slipway. Mobile crane (25T).

Anchorages

There are several good anchorages in the Gulf of Arzachena. One of the most popular is the deep bay just north of Cala Bitta at the NE corner of the gulf. Shelter here is good as long as there is nothing west in the wind. The bottom is weedy and you may need several attempts to get your anchor to hold.

Offshore Islands and Groups

The main islands of the Maddalena group, Isola Caprera, Isola Santo Stefano and Isola La Maddalena, lie six miles to the north.

Tourism

Cannigione is a secure spot to leave your yacht for a tour of some of the interesting Nuraghic remains for which the Arzachena area is renowned, especially the fortified dwelling of Nuraghe Malchittu, with its unusual passage construction; the ‘giants’ tombs’ of Coddu Ecchiu and Li Lolghi and the necropolis of I’Muri (which features Neolithic box tombs with concentric circles and stelae). Other locations worth visiting include the village of Luogosanto, nestling on top of a mountain, and the impressively sited village of Aggius, wedged between huge piles of solid granite. From there, one can continue through the Valle della Luna, an amazing gorge flanked by massive pillars of solid granite.

Personal Notes

August 2009 : The new outer breakwater was not complete. We heard that construction had apparently been halted due to a problem with quality of construction. We tied on the inner side of breakwater. Bollards were only available at the southern end; further north boats were tied to construction materials or long lines over the wall to boulders on the outer side of the breakwater. There was no water or electricity. The marina office advised that mooring to breakwater is forbidden, but the wall was full of yachts and no one hassled us. There were no berths available in marina at the time. --Wayward United Kingdom Icon.png
