Entrance

Cardiff is a port of entry for United Kingdom. For details see Entrance: United Kingdom.

Navigation

With a tidal range of up to 13m, rates in excess of 4 knots, as well as moving sand banks and rocks, navigation should be made with great care. Pay particular attention to water depths at Lavernock spit and Cardiff grounds.

Entry to the bay is via the Wrach channel, keeping the Outer Wrach buoy to Starboard. Be aware of large vessels restricted by draught entering or leaving Cardiff docks, especially near high water.

Contact 'Cardiff Barrage' on VHF Channel 18 to request a lock in. The barrage channel is regularly dredged, but check with barrage control for actual depths if uncertain. Locking times are inbound at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour and outbound at 0 and 30 minutes past the hour.

Once in the inner harbour, await green lights before entering the lock. There are 3 locks and barrage control will inform you which lock to use. Be wary of volume of water rushing from the locks into the outer harbour during locking, and be aware that echo sounder readings can be affected by the amount of silt in the water.

Berthing

Describe here the berthing options of this port. Are there moorings or you have to anchor? Do most boats moor side-to, stern-to, or bow-to? Etc.

Places to Visit

The two yacht clubs and Penarth marina give full access to Wales' capital city, with all the facilities expected. Transport links are good, with regular bus and train services, as well as more than one water taxi service linking the bay and city.
