Cariati is a small harbour constructed for pleasure craft and fishing vessels near the town of Cariati on the western side of the Golfo di Taranto in Italy, 32 miles N of Crotone and 12 miles N of Punta Alice. Like its close neighbour to the S, Ciro Marina, it is a useful overnight stop for smaller yachts (up to 15 metres) sailing into or out of the gulf rather than sailing straight across it.

Weather

During the summer the prevailing winds in the Ionian are light to moderate SW or SE seabreezes. In spring and autumn northerly winds are more frequent and can quickly rise to near gale force, especially in the lee of high mountain ranges. Winds in summer are generally light from the Straits of Messina until reaching the Golfo di Squillace between Rocella Ionica and Le Castella. With anything W in the wind, it tends to funnel down here over the mountains of southern Calabria, bringing strong gusts and raising an uncomfortable sea. The conditions to avoid, however, when cruising this part of the Ionian coast are strong southerlies. The harbours here are few and far between and none of them are really safe to enter in such conditions. Further east in the Gulf of Taranto local seabreezes predominate during the summer, although a light to moderate northerly is not uncommon.

Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
  • Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at Roma, Cagliari (Sardinia) and Augusta (Sicily)

Navigation

There are no hazards in the approach to Cariati Marina. The harbour is protected by a long northern breakwater and a shorter southern one. The breakwaters are conspicuous from either direction extending off the beach. Entry to the harbour is from ESE.

Berthing

While the harbour is primarily occupied by small fishing boats on moorings, the harbour can usually accommodate several yachts up to a maximum length of around 15 metres. Transit yachts normally berth alongside on the northern breakwater, where depths are 3.5 - 4.0 metres. Shelter is good from the prevailing winds, but the harbour is completely open to winds from ESE round to SW. Since previous reports, new pontoons are in place on the W side of the marina. Place for several yachts. The depth is variable though and care should be taken in the entrance to the marina - we observed depths less than 2.5M. The charge for the morning which includes working electricity, water(no-potable) and WiFi was € 40 (13Meters) and the tariff is shown on the comprehensive website : http://www.portoturisticocariati.it/tariffario/: When arriving there was no answer from with the telephone numbers or VHF, but there seems to be someone on hand to assist with the tailed lines, or as previously stated go along side.
