Castellammare di Stabia

Situated at the SE corner of the Bay of Naples, 15 miles SE of Naples commercial harbour, Castellammare di Stabia is itself primarily a commercial port. Yachts in transit may find a berth in the commercial port on the private pontoons at the S end of the harbour or (more likely) in the small basin of Porto Davide to the E of the main harbour. The town’s chief claim to fame is due to its mayor, Luigi Bobbio, who in October 2010 announced a ban on miniskirts and other ‘revealing clothes’ in the town. Also on the proscribed list were sunbathing, the wearing of clogs, playing soccer in public places, and blasphemy. Signor Bobbio claimed that the new measures were an attempt to ‘restore urban decorum and facilitate better civil co-existence’. So, best not to visit if you’re a leggy, sun-worshipping, clog-wearing, football-crazy atheist.

Weather

Winds along the Tyrrhenian Coast of Italy are generally light in the summer months. The most notable feature is a SW sea breeze that kicks in in late morning and blows at little more than Force 2 - 4 until the evening. Often in the Bay of Naples a flat calm can prevail for several days. Thundery conditions are not infrequent during early Spring and Autumn, and associated winds can sometimes reach gale force and kick up a substantial sea in the Bay. In winter, gales can blow from both NW and S and entry to and exit from some of the harbours along the coast can become hazardous.

Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerized voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
  • Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at La Garde (Toulon), Roma and Cagliari (Sardinia)

Navigation

In the approach from N, stay at least 300 metres offshore to avoid the dangerous underwater moles installed 200 metres off the beach to prevent erosion. The harbour is protected by a long breakwater oriented SSW/NNE. The harbour is entered from NE. Depths in the harbour range from 2.5 to 4.5 metres.

The Commercial harbour is something of a lottery. The area of quay from the root of the main harbour breakwater running 230 metres to the east is reserved for leisure and fishing craft. The pontoons here are, however, generally packed with local boats and there is precious little space for visitors. You may be lucky enough to find a free space but check if the bertholder is returning before taking up extended residence. There are reportedly no facilities on the pontoons.

How not to dress in Castellammare?

Very little around the harbour. Also, sunbathing, street football, clog-dancing, and skinny-dipping are out (see above). As a base for a visit to Naples, see entry for Naples.
