The small harbour of Cetraro lies on the Calabrian coast of Italy, along the instep of the peninsula, about one mile N of the town of the same name. The harbour has a tendency to silt and depths in the entrance were historically subject to considerable variation. Upgrading of the harbour and dredging in 2009 established depths of around 3.0 metres throughout the harbour and 5.0 - 6.0 metres in the entrance. However, it is wise to establish the current position before relying on being able to enter here.

Weather

Winds along the Calabrian Coast of Italy are generally light in the summer months. The most notable feature is a SW seabreeze that kicks in in late morning and blows at little more than Force 2 - 4 until the evening. Thundery conditions are not infrequent during early Spring and Autumn, and associated winds can sometimes reach gale force and kick up a substantial sea. In winter, gales can blow from both NW and S and entry to and exit from some of the harbours along the coast can become hazardous.

Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
  • Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at La Garde (Toulon), Roma and Cagliari (Sardinia)

Navigation

There are no dangers in the approach, other than the constant silting in the entrance. It is prudent to call the port authority on VHF channel 69 prior to entry or telephone: +39 0982 978275 or e-mail. The harbour is entered from SE. Shelter is good here in all conditions.

Berthing

Since July 2009 pontoons have reportedly been installed in the harbour, providing berths for up to 500 vessels, of which 30 are ostensibly reserved for yachts in transit. Maximum length 40 metres and maximum draft 4.0 metres. Depths on the pontoons are from 1.5 - 3.0 metres. There are some water and electricity points on the pontoons. Toilets and showers.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

None.

Anchorages

It is possible to anchor in 5.0 - 6.0 metres off the beach immediately E of the harbour. Holding is good in sand.
