Chipiona marina looking SW

The town of Chipiona is situated four miles west of the estuary of the Rio Guadalquivir, 30 miles SE of Mazagon and 10 miles NNW of Rota. The harbour, with its 400-berth marina, is a handy port of call for boats planning the 50-mile haul upriver or two-hour bus ride to Seville or a visit to the sherry-producing town of Sanlucar de Barrameda, from where boats cross the river to the beautiful Doñana National Park. The marina of Puerto Deportivo Chipiona harbour was constructed in the former fishing harbour as a part of the investments for Expo 92 in Seville. It gets very full during the season.

Navigation

From the NW - A firing range extends along the coast from five miles SE of Mazagon to the settlement of Matalascanas 17 miles NNW of Chipions. When firing is in progress, a safety vessel warns transiting yachts on channel 16 and a diversion of up to four miles may be necessary. The coast from Mazagon has low cliffs backed by sand dunes for the first 14 miles, after which the coast in flat for the 15 miles to the Guadalquivir estuary.

From the SE - The conspicuous lighthouse at Chipiona on the headland of Punta del Perro is one of the highest in Spain. It lies one mile to the SW of the harbour entrance and marks the dangerous reef of Bajo Salmedina just under two miles off the headland. Vessels should stay to seaward of an east cardinal buoy marking the reef before turning east for the harbour entrance.

Entering the harbour - A fairway buoy indicates the approach channel to the marina, which lies 1.3 miles to the SE. Two red pillar buoys mark the port side of the channel from here to the harbour mouth, which should be entered on a course of 225°. Depths at the entrance are around 3.5 metres, so care is needed, especially if there is any swell running.

Berthing

Call Puerto Deportivo Chipiona on VHF channel 09 or telephone: +34 956 373 844. E-mail: [email protected]. Alternatively, berth on the hammerhead on the central mole, directly beneath the marina office. Visiting yachts normally berth in the outer basin to port of the entrance, where the depths are greater. During high season, it is wise to check with the marina office prior to arrival as the marina is often full.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

The Puerto Deportivo Chipiona has a total of 412 berths, 10 of which are reserved for vessels in transit. Visitors normally berth in the outer basin on finger pontoons. Maximum length 32 metres. Maximum draught 3.5 metres. Water and electricity. Toilets and showers. Laundrette. Fuel pontoon. Travel hoist (32T). Restaurant and bar. Note: although the shelter is good in most conditions, an uncomfortable swell develops in strong NW winds.

Anchorages

Anchorage is possible in the Rio Guadalquivir, upriver of the town of Sanlucar de Barrameda five miles to the NE. Considerable swell from river traffic.

Tourism

The town of Chipiona lies about 10 minutes away from the marina. Although a tourist town, the architecture is quite attractive, with low-rise apartments in a Moorish style all along the sea front. The town of Sanlucar de Barrameda about ten kilometers NE of the marina is well worth a long walk or shorter cycle. Although a major centre of production for the salty-tanged, dry manzanilla style of sherry, Sanlucar remains a surprisingly attractive town, with bodegas high on the hill alongside the castle and the lower town a maze of crooked streets and cobbled walkways. It is the perfect place to sample a glass or two of the local nectar straight from the barrel. Chipiona is also a good base for a trip by bus to Seville (two hours away), with its wonderful Alcazar Palace (intricately detailed Moorish courtyards and fabulous gardens filled with palms and other exotic plants); magnificent cathedral (Christopher Columbus’ tomb and stunning gilded reredos); 97 metre-high Giralda tower (the only remnant of the original mosque) and atmospheric Barrio de Santa Cruz, the old Jewish quarter. For most cruising yachtsmen, a visit to Seville is one of the highlights of a cruise along this coast.
