Civitanova Marche harbour from NW

Civitanova Marche is a large fishing and leisure boat harbour and tourist resort situated on the Adriatic coast of Italy around nine miles NNW of the port of Porto San Giorgio and 15 miles SSE of the harbour of Numana. Four miles inland lies the fortified hilltop town of Civitanova Marche Alta, originally a Roman foundation subsequently fortified in the Middle Ages. The harbour provides around 500 berths on pontoons run by the local yacht club and a variety of concessionaires for vessels of up to 18 metres. Vessels over this size are prohibited from entering. Most of the harbour is relatively shallow and berthing here will not suit deep draft yachts.

Weather

During the summer months, the prevailing winds in the Adriatic are light to moderate coastal sea breezes. In spring and autumn, northerly winds are more frequent and can quickly rise to near gale force, especially in the northern Adriatic, where the much-feared “bora” is caused by high pressure over the mountains to the NE coupled with low pressure over southern Italy. Fortunately, the fiercest “bora” is normally to be expected in the winter months. Thunderstorms are occasionally experienced in spring and especially autumn and can be accompanied by violent winds of gale force and above. Luckily they are rarely long-lasting. In the southern Adriatic, the “Scirocco”, a S/SE wind blowing up from North Africa which can last for several days, is more common. Unlike the “bora”, which can arrive without warning, a “scirocco” tends to build in strength over 24-48 hours, sometimes reaching gale force (especially in winter).

Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerized voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
  • Navtex weather forecasts covering the Adriatic are broadcast from stations at Roma, Trieste, Kerkyra (Greece) and Split (Croatia)

Navigation

The most distinctive feature of the approach is the prominent spire of a church due W of the harbour. Closer in, the S-shaped outer breakwater is clearly visible. The harbour is entered from NNE, keeping to the centre of the channel to avoid underwater ballasting. Depths in the entrance are 4.0 - 4.5 metres. Entry is difficult in strong onshore winds. On the E side of the harbour a steel cable is laid between the end of the short pier and the SE leg of the mole to assist with mooring fishing vessels and this area should be avoided by visiting yachts.

There are yacht berths on nine pontoons extending from the quays on the W and N sides of the harbour. Depths at the pontoons range from 2.0 – 3.5 metres. Visiting yachts are most likely to find a berth on the pontoons in the NW corner of the harbour, which are managed by the local sailing club, Club Vela Porto Civitanova. The best depths on the pontoons are at the outer end, where there are 2.5 - 3.5 metres. Water and electricity on the pontoons. Shelter on the pontoons is good, although strong N/NE winds send in an unpleasant swell. The club has a clubhouse with all the usual facilities. Visitors are provided with a key card for exit from and entry to the yacht club compound.

Places to Visit

Hilltop town of Civitanova Marche Alta
Town gate of Civitanova Marche Alta

The old town town of Civitanova Marche Alta 5km uphill from the port is a delight to explore, with much of its 14th century walls and several defensive towers still intact. Unlike Ascoli Piceno, which was constructed in travertine, Civitanova Marche Alta was built of brick and some of the buildings look surprisingly modern. The town contains several palazzos and 14th and 15th century churches that are worth a visit.
