Kugelbake, symbol of Cuxhaven

Cuxhaven is an independent town and is situated on the shore of the North Sea at the mouth of the Elbe River. Especially its town quarters Duhnen, Döse and Sahlenburg are popular vacation spots on the North Sea and home to about 52,000 residents. Cuxhaven is home to an important fisherman's wharf and ship registration point for Hamburg, Germany as well as the Kiel Canal until 2008. The city's symbol, known as the Kugelbake is a beacon once used as a lighthouse; the wooden landmark on the mouth of the Elbe marks the boundary between the river and the North Sea.

Cruising the region

Sailing from Borkum or Helgoland to the Kiel Canal or Hamburg, Germany, Cuxhaven offers a safe marina for stopover.

Islands

  • Neuwerk (3 km², 39 inhabitants) is a Wadden Sea island on the German North Sea coast and is located northwest of Cuxhaven, between the Weser and Elbe estuaries. Administratively, it forms a homonymous quarter of the city of Hamburg, Germany. This quarter includes the nearby uninhabited islands Scharhörn and Nigehörn. The distance to Hamburg center is about 120 km.

During low tide Neuwerk can be reached on foot or by horse carriages from Cuxhaven, at other times by ship.

  • The smaller islands Scharhörn and Nigehörn are bird sanctuaries, closed to the public. All three islands and the Wadden Sea around them form the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park.
