Overview

If traveling down the South Island's west coast, Hokitika, just south of Greymouth, is worth a visit just to see the Greenstone factory. This material (New Zealand jade) is highly prized by the Māori for making charms and objects of art, and their facility creates some wondrous pieces.

Not really a place to spend days, but it would make a pleasant half-day tour before setting off further south.
