Veli Iz on Iz Island from SSW

island lies off the mainland coast of Croatia six miles SW of the port of Zadar and sandwiched between the larger islands of Ugljan and Dugi Otok. Although one of the smaller islands, at just under seven miles long and 1.5 miles wide, it caters well for the visiting yacht, with a small marina at its main harbour of Veli Iz and six other small harbours and anchorages around its shores. The island has no natural springs and water is scarce in summer. It also has no beaches, which has limited tourism to some extent and kept the island relatively unspoilt. Water is only available to visiting yachts in the main harbour of Veli Iz. Iz Island is especially known for its pottery, which is a long-standing tradition in both of its main villages of Veli Iz and Mali Iz.

Anchorages

Note: U. (short for Uvala) = cove. Anchorages are listed from N to S.

U. Soline

U. Soline/wiki/I%C5%BE#U._Soline
Anchorage icon U. Soline U. Soline 44°03.668'N, 015°04.596'E
U. Soline is situated at the NW end of the island, partially sheltered from N winds by a chain of islets extending for a mile to the NW. There are several isolated shoals in the approach from N and S and careful attention to the chart is needed. There are also fish farms in the area, which can make navigation difficult. The anchorage is entered from W between the islet of Glurovic and Iz Island; note that the E channel between Glurovic islet and Iz is shallow and dangerous (and in any case usually blocked by a fish farm). Once in the inlet, anchor in 3.0 - 5.0 metres towards the head. Holding is good in sand. Shelter in the anchorage is good in all but strong NW winds, when a swell enters. No facilities ashore.

U. Brsanj

Anchorage icon U. Brsanj U. Brsanj 44°01.412'N, 015°08.876'E
U. Brsanj is a V-shaped inlet on the SE coast of the island, just under two miles from its SE tip. On the W side of the inlet is the island’s main car ferry quay, where the daily ferries from Zadar berth. Around 100 metres S of the ferry quay is a rough breakwater, behind which a yacht can anchor in 4.0 - 5.0 metres in reasonable shelter. Holding is good in sand and weed. This position is protected from all but NE winds.

U. Vodenjak Veli

U. Vodenjak Veli/wiki/I%C5%BE#U._Vodenjak_Veli
Anchorage icon U. Vodenjak Veli U. Vodenjak Veli 44°00.960'N, 015°09.026'E
U. Vodenjak Veli lies half a mile SSE of U. Brsanj, immediately NW of the small islet of Skoljic, which is connected to Iz Island by a shallow spit extending from its W side. The V-shaped inlet here offers excellent protection from all except E and SE winds. Proceed as far into the inlet as your draft permits and anchor in 3.0 - 5.0 metres, taking a line ashore if the anchorage is busy. The holding is good in sand and weed.

Transportation

Daily ferries to Zadar on mainland.

Tourism

Iz pottery was once famed throughout Dalmatia

History

Give a short history of the island.

Places to Visit

Iž Island was formerly celebrated for its highly decorated pottery, traditionally made in the settlements of Veli Iz and Mali Iz - at one time by nearly 70 families and now by just one family in Veli Iz, the Petrovic family.

Mali Iz has a chapel of St Mary dating back to the ninth century chapel and also boasts an eleventh-century pre-Romanesque church. There is also an old fortified castle nearby. Every year in late July Iz Island hosts a festival at which a ‘King of Iz’ is elected. The festival reputedly dates back several hundred years.
