Ile Lebris
| |
Ile Lebris is a small island on the west coast of Grande Terre, New Caledonia. It is the northern most anchorage after leaving Noumea before you have to leave the shelter of the barrier reef to go further north. There are a couple of good anchorages, provided that the conditions are predominantly easterly. The island appears uninhabited.
The anchorages at Ile Lebris provide a convenient overnight stopping point when planning to head north up the coast to Baie de Bourail or returning down the coast from further north..
Cruising the region
To travel further north along the east coast, exit through Pass de Uarai. It is then 20 nm of open sea sailing to Baie de Bourail.
Heading south, it is possible to stay inside the barrier reef all the way to the bottom of Grande Terre. Immediately south of Lebris, there are anchorages on the north side of Iles Testard and Ile Isie.

Weather
Local weather conditions?
Sources for Weather forecasts
Local forecasts are, of course, in French, but non-French speakers should find them relatively easy to understand. A very useful vocabulary can be found at How to Understand French Weather Forecasts for Sailors.
The main source of weather information for the area around New Caledonia is Meteo France Nouvelle-Calédonie. The marine section provides a 6 day forecast for the whole region, with details for each of the passes through the barrier reef.
Nouméa radio broadcasts the weather report in French on VHF 16, everyday at 6:30, 9:30, 15:15, 18:30.
There is a set of repeater channels allowing receipt of weather info anywhere in the country:
- Nouméa area: VHF 26
- Southern portion of the Grande Terre: VHF 28
- Isle of Pines and the southern lagoon: VHF 25
- Grande Terre North west coast: VHF 25
- Northern portion of Grande Terre: VHF 24
- Ouvea: VHF 23
- Lifou: VHF 26
- Maré: VHF 87

Communication
Also see World Cruiser's Nets.
Arriving from the south, there is a clear and well marked channel from the vicinity of Baie de St Vincent. Approaching from seaward, Passe de Uarai is unmarked, although there is a sand cay on the southern side of the pass. There is a green marker on the reef that extends from the southern side of Ile Lebris. The northern side of the Passe and channel leading to Lebris is very shallow. The Cruising Guide to New Caledonia shows two red bouys defining the edge of this shoal area, but they were not in place in 2010. Proceed with caution and in good light only.
Entrance
You must check in with Customs in Noumea before progressing anywhere else in New Caledonia.

Anchorages
- The west coast of Lebris, off an abandoned jetty, offers good shelter in easterly conditions. The bottom is sand and coral. If you land by the old jetty, there is a track heading up the valley which will eventually lead to the top of the hill on the south side of the island. There you will find excellent views of the outer reef
- In more southerly conditions, pass west of Ilot Gero (the area inshore of Gero is too shoal) and anchor in the inlet on the northern side of Lebris
