Ilovik channel from Losinj

Ilovik Island lies off the mainland coast of Croatia, barely a mile SSE of the much larger island of Losinj. Between it and its smaller twin island to the N, Sv. Petar, there is a narrow channel little more than 100 metres wide which provides sheltered moorings for around 60 yachts in delightful surroundings. The village ashore has a lively tourism industry during the season, with regular tripper boat arrivals from Mali Losinj, and is equipped with several good fish restaurants.

Depths in the channel range from 5.0 metres at its shallowest and narrowest point to 10.0 metres where it widens out. There are no dangers in the approach, except if approaching from NW, when shoals extend for 50 - 60 metres from the headlands on both sides of the channel. Shelter is good from all directions, although strong SE winds send in an uncomfortable and persistent swell.

There are three berthing options at Ilovik Island:

  1. Mooring jetty - A short jetty extends NE from the waterfront of Ilovik village, the N side of which is reserved for the ferries and tripper boats. Around half a dozen yachts can moor on the S side, using the laid mooring lines provided, in depths of 3.0 - 3.5 metres.
  2. Mooring buoys - If the jetty is full, a yacht can moor in the channel between Ilovik and Sv. Petar, picking up one of the 60 or so mooring buoys which run along both sides of the channel. Depths at the buoys vary from 3.0 to 4.0 metres.
  3. Anchorage - If no moorings are available, it is possible to anchor beyond the row of moorings, to the SE of the village. Depths here are 5.0 - 6.0 metres and the holding is good in sand and mud. Alternatively, anchor on the NE side of the channel, close to Sv. Petar island, in depths of 3.0 - 4.0 metres. There are bollards along the shore here to which you can take lines to prevent swinging.

Places to Visit

There is little to do on the island other than explore the picturesque village of Ilovik and sample the food at one of its numerous fish restaurants. Around the island are several tiny coves which are good for swimming if weather conditions permit.
