Overview

Indonesia consists of 17,508 islands, about 6,000 of which are inhabited. These are scattered over both sides of the equator. The five largest islands are Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan (the Indonesian part of Borneo), New Guinea (shared with Papua New Guinea), and Sulawesi. Indonesia shares land borders with Malaysia on the islands of Borneo and Sebatik, Papua New Guinea on the island of New Guinea, and East Timor on the island of Timor. Indonesia also shares borders with Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines to the north and Australia to the south across narrow straits of water. The capital, Jakarta, is on Java and is the nation's largest city, followed by Surabaya, Bandung, Medan, and Semarang.

Climate & Weather

Hot and humid climate. The period from July to September is the dry season and from December to January is the rainy period. Temperatures range from 75-90°F (24-33°C). The islands fall within the influence of the SE monsoon from April to October and the NW monsoon from November to March. Land and sea breezes predominate nearby the islands. The islands are not affected by tropical cyclones.

  • The High Seas (METAREA) forecast for Indonesian waters - Equator to 12d South between 90d to 140d East, and southwards to Australian coast between 125d and 140d East - is published by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. It is broadcast on HF/SSB frequencies by Australian Weather West (VMW) on a regular automated schedule. See their relevant website page for schedule and frequencies.
