The Jervis Bay Territory is an independent territory administered by the Australian Federal Government from the capital city, Canberra, and is the home of the Royal Australian Navy base HMAS Creswell.

There are two small communities in the area, each of around 250 people.

Do not try to enter the bay between Bowen Island and the Southern headland. Although at times it looks navigable there are many shallow rocks and usually breaking waves.
