===== Route Along the City Front=====
===== Route Along the City Front=====

Shoal ground separates the northern and southern portions of the Kota Kinabalu waterfront. Vessels can either circle to the west of Pulau Gaya, about a 12 mile detour, or use the well marked channel along the city front. The author has not observed less than 5m of water (MLLW datum) during transits. The channel is about 50m wide and well marked by pairs of lateral day marks. These are conspicuous poles displaying red and green lateral shapes. However its approaches are not obvious. Note that this route's midpoint is the harbor proper so the day marks laterally switch halfway through.

Transiting from the north to the south: Begin in the southernmost part of Teluk Gaya [[image:World_icon.png]] {{Coord|05|59.50|N|116|04.60|E|}} near the commercial wharves and police dock. Follow the city front and seawall SSW about 0.6nm leaving the green lateral marks to starboard until reaching a waterfront building with a red roof. Also in the area are many moored local fishing boats. To the W you will see the well marked channel through the shoals. Now, leaving the harbor, the red marks will be left to starboard. After about 0.8nm you will exit the channel [[image:World_icon.png]] {{Coord|05|58.90|N|116|03.30|E|}} into relatively open water.

Kota Kinabalu, formerly known as Jesselton, is the capital of Sabah, a state in Malaysia, as well as the capital of the West Coast Division of Sabah. Located on the northwest coast of the island of Borneo facing the South China Sea and Tunku Abdul Rahman Park on one side, and with Mount Kinabalu in the background, Kota Kinabalu sprawls for kilometers along the coast and towards inland. With an estimated population of 532,129 in the city and 700,000 in the urban area, it is the largest urban centre in Sabah and the sixth-largest in Malaysia.

Kota Kinabalu, often simply known as K.K. within Malaysia, and to an extent, internationally, as a tourism getaway and a major gateway into Sabah and Borneo. Kinabalu National Park is located about 90 kilometres from the city, and besides this, it also features a number of tourist attractions in and around the city itself. The city is also one of the major industrial and commercial centers in East Malaysia. These two factors combine to make Kota Kinabalu one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.

There are six islands located off the coast of the city. Five of which, designated under the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, are Pulau Gaya, Pulau Sapi, Pulau Manukan, Pulau Sulug, and Pulau Mamutik. These islands are popular among tourists visiting the city as well as for locals. The islands are mainly uninhabited except for Pulau Gaya which has a population of at least 8,000. Pulau Sepanggar is located north of the National Park opposite Sepanggar Bay.

The climate of Kota Kinabalu can be characterised as tropical monsoon, marked by a high degree of humidity, and high rainfall alternating with a lesser period of the dry season.

Located in the South China Sea on the northern tip of the island of Borneo, Sabah is easily accessible by sea and air. The international airport, 5 minutes from Sutera Harbour Resort, has flights departing to countless major cities throughout the Asian region via links with Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and an increasing amount of direct flights to the island.

How to navigate into Sutera

If coming from the South - go to waypoint 1. @ 5° 59' North x 115° 59' East; then go to Waypoint 2. @ 5° 59' North x 116° 00' East, then head for the Marina breakwater and enter from the north side.

If coming from the North keep west of Gaya Island until south of it - then go to the above waypoints.

Below is the instructions how to navigate the final approach

Come in on a heading of 090°T, keeping Tanjung Waking a ½ mile to port. When at Tanjung Wakong, turn towards Sutera Harbour Resort, course 128°T. Note: This approach is using Admiralty Chart #3626. However, the most recent chart does not indicate Sutera Harbour Resort's location. Furthermore, the charted depth outside the Marina is no longer accurate, as the Marina channel has been dredged and expanded. The average dept at lowest astronomical tide (LAT) is 5 meters inside the basin and outside the breakwater is more than 7 metres.

Route Along the City Front

Shoal ground separates the northern and southern portions of the Kota Kinabalu waterfront. Vessels can either circle to the west of Pulau Gaya, about a 12 mile detour, or use the well marked channel along the city front. The author has not observed less than 5m of water (MLLW datum) during transits. The channel is about 50m wide and well-marked by pairs of lateral day marks. These are conspicuous poles displaying red and green lateral shapes. However, its approaches are not obvious. Note that this route's midpoint is the harbor proper so the day marks laterally switch halfway through.

Transiting from the north to the south: Begin in the southernmost part of Teluk Gaya World icon.png 05°59.50′N, 116°04.60′E near the commercial wharves and police dock. Follow the city front and seawall SSW about 0.6nm leaving the green lateral marks to starboard until reaching a waterfront building with a red roof. Also in the area are many moored local fishing boats. To the W you will see the well-marked channel through the shoals. Now, leaving the harbor, the red marks will be left to starboard. After about 0.8nm you will exit the channel World icon.png 05°58.90′N, 116°03.30′E into relatively open water.

Transiting from the south to the North: Be sure to locate the southernmost lateral marks of the channel as there are other marks in the area. Use the inverse of the above description. Follow the city front all the way to the commercial wharves leaving all the green lateral marks to port as there is shoal water beyond.
