Anchorages

Pulau Setang Besar

Anchorage may be taken on the W side at World icon.png 1°47.03′N, 110°10.13′E 10-15m sand and rock. The N and W sides of the small island are rocky and steep-to. A sand spit extends far S and E as charted. The water can be clear here. The island can visited at night by a busy fleet of small local fishing boats.

Santubong

The Santubong river provides an attractive and popular anchorage for vessels visiting Kuching. The prominent and mystical Mount Santubong dominates the anchorage's view. As it is close to the site of the annual Rainforest World Music Festival the anchorage becomes especially popular at the time. Entering the anchorage requires crossing the shoals of Kuala Santubong far offshore. The river also has shoal hazards and a bar at the entrance. But the route is used regularly by tugs pulling barges and small shipping.

Begin offshore by approaching World icon.png 1°46.36′N, 110°16.66′E from N or W. Then follow a course of 161ºm magnetic for 3.9nm to waypoint World icon.png 1°42.63′N, 110°17.87′E. It is reported that the minimum depth encountered on this segment in Summer 2010 was 4m at MLLW. A leading mark is charted, and reported on other sources, but was not apparent in Summer 2010. On reaching the waypoint immediately turn port to a heading of 085ºm. A daymark consisting of two poles, one leaning over, will be 0.34nm ahead. Leave this daymark to starboard about 50m. Directly ahead, 1.6nm, on the river bank are leading marks which should be followed. Depths on this segment are reported as greater than 4m at MLLW. When within 100m of the lower leading mark you can steer for the north bank of the river where it is common to anchor.

An obstruction is reported at World icon.png 1°42.92′N, 110°19.56′E. Vessels have been observed anchored as far W as the village through 1nm upstream, past the aquaculture shacks. The river current, tides, wind and different vessel characteristics necessitate giving extra swinging room at anchor. The S half of the river here is frequented by heavy shipping traffic at all hours. The N bank near the village and dock shoals in some places. The N back upstream from the government pier is deep to the mangroves. The aquaculture structures use long heavy moorings 100m or more into the river. The bottom is either mud or hard. Holding, after a time, is reported as good.

The Malaysian fisheries department keeps a large patrol boat here at the government pier. Use of the pier is reported to be discouraged. There is a private floating dock structure W of the government pier. This is not to be used by vessels. However the owner graciously allows it to be used by the dinghies of visiting vessels. The owner operates a Koi farm here. The staff is friendly and derives some income by providing fuel, water, laundry and other assistance to visiting vessels. Visitors may walk through the property to the highway to visit the village of Santubong. There is a bus stop just E of the driveway. Hitchhiking to Kuching is easy. There is a moderately good shopping center about 10km towards Kuching, E across from a Petronas service station. The village of Santubong has some very basic markets and restaurants.

There are large crocodiles living here. There are friendly Irrawaddy dolphins near here. There is a trail to the summit of Mount Santubong. Formalities are to be conducted as for Kuching proper.
