Lamu or Lamu Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a small town on Lamu Island, which in turn is a part of the Lamu Archipelago in Kenya. Situated 341 km (212 mi) by road northeast of Mombasa that ends at Mokowe Jetty, from where the sea channel has to be crossed to reach Lamu Island. It is very popular with the tourists.

Yachts can anchor off the beach, but take care on the approach as there are un-marked rocks.

Tourism

History

Lamu’s history is not pleasant. Lamu was a prosperous the 19th-century trading post specializing in slaves and ivory. The trade in slaves with the Arabs lasted until 1907. After that time Lamu experienced an economic decline.

  • Swim and walk on the lovely long sandy beach to the S of the town
  • Take a ride in a dhow
