Ligia harbour from NE

The small harbour of Ligia lies on the NE coast of the island of Lefkas in the Ionian Sea of Greece, less than a mile SW of the southern entrance to the Lefkas Canal. Essentially a fishing boat harbour, it may be possible for a visiting yacht to lie alongside one of the boats on the breakwater quay, especially if eating at one of the several fish tavernas on the waterfront. Most yachts, however, tend to anchor off in settled weather and use the dinghy to go ashore. Shelter is excellent in the prevailing NW winds but less so in strong winds from other directions. The village has no facilities.

Navigation

There are no dangers in the approach to Ligia. The curved breakwater that encloses the harbour on the E side is conspicuous once close in. In the approach from N, it is a simple right turn once you leave the end of the Lefkas Canal. If approaching from S, it should not be confused with the similar harbour of Nikiana two miles to the south.

Entrance

Lefkas is the nearest port of entry if arriving from N or Sami on Kefalonia or Vathi on Ithaca if arriving from S.

Berthing

A yacht is unlikely to find space to anchor moor on the quay in Ligia since it is usually full of fishing boats and if there is space you may be occupying the place where one usually sits. Go alongside the breakwater quay if there is a space, but be prepared to move off if challenged. Better still, make a prior arrangement with one of the local tavernas and the proprietor will most likely arrange for you to lie alongside his own boat (see Personal Experiences below). Depths alongside the breakwater quay are around 4.0 – 4.5 metres. Depths on the quay in front of the tavernas are considerably less and in any case this quay is usually full of small local boats. Shelter in the harbour is excellent, although strong easterlies make it uncomfortable.

None

Anchorages

Many yachts visiting Ligia prefer to anchor off NE of the harbour. Depths are 5.0 – 6.0 metres and the holding is good in mud and weed (once through the weed). Shelter is reasonable in the prevailing NW winds, but less good in S and E winds.

  • The owner of the Taverna Makis (telephone: +30 694 7327 289) has a boat on the quay and will let you moor alongside if you are eating at his establishment. --Athene of Lymington
