Lindos (Λίνδος) is pleasant anchorage just under the castle of ancient Lindos, one of Rhodes main attractions. The anchorage is protected from the meltemi but is open to the E and with southerlies there is a swell. Anchor at 5-10 m where there is room. The bottom is sand and rocks, usually good holding.

Warning: With the meltemi there are fierce gusts into the bay. Make sure your anchor is holding.

Tourism

Líndos is not only a good anchorage but also a lovely town and a very important archaeological site.

The Acropolis of Lindos (Tues-Fri 8:00-18:00, Sat & Sun 8:30-14:40) dominates the town and cove. One can walk up the steep hill or hire a donkey. Inside the Acropolis one can see the ruins of the Doric Stoa dedicated to Lindian Athena the patron goddess of the city. Further up the "stairway to Heaven" leads to the foundations of the Propylaea and to the temple of Athena. On the N slope is the small sanctuary of Voukopion where as the name implies bulls were sacrificed to Athena.

The village of Lindos was one of the loveliest villages in the Aegean. Alas, it has been "discovered." Many wealthy foreigners, British, Germans, Italians, even Saudi Princes, have bought houses here and its cobbled streets can be full of crowds. Still, during the off-season the village retains some of its older charms.

Personal Notes

Personal experiences?

  • 2014 A beautiful harbour. Clean water, fabulous fortress and the lack of marinas or large hotels make this a truly special place. --Monterey Bermuda Icon.png
