Deserted yacht quay in Lixouri harbour

The town of Lixouri and its large purpose-built harbour are situated on the W side of the Gulf of Argostoli at the SW end of the island of Kefalonia in Greece, just three miles from the harbour of Argostoli on the E side of the gulf. Although the harbour is large and has plenty of space for visiting yachts, few tend to visit, preferring the bustle of Argostoli on the other side. Also, the harbour is subject to some silting, and the regular arrival of the ferries from Argostoli tends to stir up the mud, making depths uneven. However, as a quieter alternative to its busier neighbour across the gulf, Lixouri has much to offer, including some good waterfront tavernas. Shelter in the harbour is excellent, although there can be some swell in strong N or NE winds (albeit not as bad as Argostoli).

Navigation

A good chart and careful navigation is necessary in the approach to Argostoli. There are reefs off both the E and W headlands at the entrance to the Gulf of Argostoli and shoal patches to be avoided on entering the Gulf itself. The harbour lies two miles from the W entrance to the Gulf on the W shore. It is entered from NE. Depths in the entrance are 5.0 – 6.0 metres and at the quay 2.5 – 3.0 metres (but see below).

Entrance

Argostoli is the nearest port of entry. Customs offices there are at the N end of the yacht quay.

Berthing

There are effectively two berthing options in Lixouri, the yacht quay at the S end of the main harbour, where yachts moor using their anchors, or, if there is space to be had, on the pontoons of the small marina to the N of the harbour, where there are laid moorings.

Yacht Quay

This is where most yachts usually berth as it has the greatest number of spaces and good shelter from the prevailing NW winds. The quay is the section immediately S of the ferry jetty, which protrudes from the W side of the harbour. The approach should be made towards the ferry jetty to avoid shoal patches towards the S side of the harbour (see link to Local chartlet above). Because of the frequent ferries, the harbour does tend to silt a little and depths can vary from those shown. Care is therefore needed when manoeuvering in the harbour. Around 10-15 yachts can anchor moor at the yacht quay here in depths ranging from 3.0 metres at the N end to 2.5 metres at the S end. Note that the depths along the quay on the S side of the harbour are much less, being barely a metre in places. The holding is good in mud once the anchor is well dug in. Shelter on the quay is excellent from the prevailing NW winds, but can become a little uncomfortable with strong NE winds.

Private Marina

There is a small private marina 200 metres N of the main harbour, where a yacht may be able to negotiate a berth. The marina is entered from NE between a long detached E breakwater and a shorter S one. The only space likely to be available is on the third pontoon from the N end, where there are several laid moorings tailed to pickup buoys. The moorings are owned by the Sea Trek charter company and you may be lucky enough to find one free for a short stay. Depths on the pontoon are 3.75 metres. There is water and electricity on the pontoons. Shelter here is excellent in all conditions.

Anchorages

It is possible (if a little pointless) to anchor with care in the S part of the harbour, well clear of the ferry jetty. Depths are only 3.0 – 3.5 metres and a short scope is advisable to avoid swinging into the shallows near the S quay.

  • Surprisingly quiet in May, when we visited. Makes a peaceful alternative to the constant bustle of Argostoli. --Athene of Lymington 18:03, 31 May 2013 (BST)
