Mahón or Maó is the largest city and port of the second largest of the Balearic Islands, Minorca. It is a very attractive city consisting of the waterfront, Mahon, and the old inland city Mao.

Approaches to Mahon are straightforward. Proceed into the 2 nM fjord.

Mahon is a port of entry for Spain. For details see Entrance: Spain.

Berthing

Mahon is a large harbor in a 2-mile deep fjord. It is sheltered from all weather. Along the banks of the fjord, there are many anchored boats, yet there is hardly any room for a visiting yacht. If you cannot find a spot, proceed to the marina.

Marina Menorca has 230 moorings laid out in 7 pontoons with laid moorings. It located in the Colarsega of the Port of Mahón. Accommodates yachts 5 to 60 metres in length. Water, electricity, toilets & showers (in a trailer within their secure area), WiFi.

The Harbor of Mahon

The town also provides some berths but are usually reserved by locally based boats, in addition, there are some moorings offshore for the use of which the town charges a fee. It is best to inquire in VHF Channel 09.

  • There are many good stores in the town. Make sure that you buy the famous cheese, Queso de Mahón
  • Camping Gaz is available in the chandleries along the waterfront

Transportation

There are daily flights to the Spanish mainland and other destinations within the EU as well as ferries to Alicante.

Tourism

History

The Carthaginians occupied the island in 205 BC and named the port after Mago Barca the brother of Hannibal. In the middle ages, Mahon was occupied by the Moors. In 1287 it captured by Alfonso III of Aragon who established the Kingdom of Majorca, a vassal state to the kingdom of Aragon. In 1707 the British took the island from the Spanish and kept it until the Napoleonic Wars in the 18th century when it went back to Spain.
