More notes about the marina

Marina da Ribeira is situated at the fishing port of Peniche, about 24 miles south from Nazare and 45 north from Cascais in Portugal. The marina provides a total of 140 berths, of which 20 are designated for visitors, for yachts up to 15 metres and in minimum depths of 3.5 metres.

Communication

Call the Harbour Master on VHF channel 09. If no response, berth at the guest pontoon on the outer side of the marina. Commonly known as Marina de Peniche, it has a total of 140 berths on floating pontoons, plus a guest pontoon on the outer side. The guest pontoon, which was replaced in 2012, is managed by the harbour master and can handle just about any size of boat within reason. Vessels of about 25 m have tied up to the pontoon. Both sides of the guest pontoon may be used. Do not berth in the marina itself. The marina is run by the Clube Naval de Peniche and all berths are rented on a yearly basis. An empty berth will most likely mean the owner went fishing or for a sail and will be furious when he returns to find his berth occupied. Some berths in the marina may be temporarily rented to transients. Ask at the Clube Naval de Peniche about this possibility.

Navigation

From either direction, the rugged cape of Cabo Carvoeiro, capped with a prominent lighthouse, is a good landmark about 1.5 miles west of the harbour. The harbour is on the southern side of the peninsula and entry is from the east. The marina is to port on entry just beyond the short quay projecting from the western breakwater. Shelter is good in the prevailing winds, but there is an unpleasant swell in southerlies.

Berthing

Berthing assistance may be provided by calling in advance on VHF channel 09. Visitors berth alongside on the long pontoon joining the three shorter pontoons forming an E shape. It is preferable to berth on the inside of the long pontoon if there is space to avoid the wash from fishing boats and ferries (also the chop which can build up in southerly winds). The guest pontoon was replaced with a better one in 2012.

  • I live near Peniche and keep Jakatar at the marina. Peniche is perhaps one of the most colourful and authentic ports on Portugal's western coast. The guest dock is very wide and robust. Although the swell from passing boats can be annoying at times, the affordable rates and the charm of this historic town are well worth a visit -- Jakatar
