More notes about Mayotte

Mayotte (French: Collectivité départementale de Mayotte), is an overseas collectivity of France consisting of a main island, Grande-Terre (or Mahoré), a smaller island, Petite-Terre (or Pamanzi), and several islets around these two.

Mayotte is located at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean, between northern Madagascar and northern Mozambique. The territory is geographically part of the Comoro Islands, but has been politically separate since the 1970s. The territory is also known as Mahoré, the native name of its main island, especially by advocates of its inclusion in the Union of Comoros.

Navigation

Any navigation notes here. If this section does not apply remove it.

Entrance

Arrival

(21/10/07) It is now mandatory to enter Mayotte through the main pass in the north, M'Zamboro. This pass is well marked/lit and the chart is accurate (WGS 84) making arrival at any time of day possible. Entry through any other pass is strictly forbidden. Departure is permitted by any pass.

Yachts should anchor (or pick up a mooring) in "Bay de Pamanzi" (Dzaoudzi), and notify the Port Captain of your arrival. All formalities are handled ashore - Port Captain, Immigration (Police aux Frontiers), and Customs (Douanes) - in that order - (no fees are charged). Clearance is possible on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Basic French is required as the officials do not normally have any English. All boats, whether French or not, must clear in. You may only move from your initial anchorage/mooring once clearance has been completed.

Port Control: VHF 09 or 16, Ph: 02 69 601033, Fax: 02 69 601381.

Visit Customs the day before departure from Mayotte for outward clearance.
