More notes about the marina

Msida Marina, including its protective breakwater, is generally the best place to keep a yacht in Valletta's Marsamxett harbour in terms of being the most sheltered. However like most of Malta's yachting berthing facilities it is usually crowded and berths may be hard to come by.

In early 2011 the marina was taken over by a private company, Creek Developments, having previously been run by the Malta Maritime Authority. Creek Developments is aiming to carry out a major refurbishment of the facilities including replacing of aging pontoons and installation of shower and toilet facilities. Work on replacing the pontoons started in April 2012. Creek Developments have an office midway along the northern side of the marina, just to the east of the Slipway Bar.

There are laid moorings to the pontoons and breakwater.

Location

In Marsamxett harbour between Valletta and Sliema. Protected by Msida breakwater.

Warning: When the NE wind blows, the dreaded Gregale, some swell finds its way into the marina, though notably less than elsewhere in Marsamxett Harbour. If leaving a boat unattended, extra lines may be required, especially if moored to the inside of the breakwater where it may be advisable to leave extra space between the boat and breakwater.

Berth reservation

The marina is very crowded and popular. It is best to make contact plenty of time before arrival. Yachts should email the marina in advance stating their dimensions and the period a berth will be required for. When out of season, yachts generally moor on the inside of the breakwater.

Navigation

The approaches are straight forward, however yachts should watch out for numerous day tripper boats operating around the harbour.

  • Sy Swivel spent the winter month in Msida Marina with the crew living aboard. The newly installed facilities, friendly and helpful marina staff and, for Malta, morderate prices let us only recommend the marina for wintering in Malta. Advantages: nearby city and local transport, altough it might not be the quietest place on the island. --Sy Swivel
