The small harbour of Nikiana lies on the NE coast of the island of [[Lefkas]] in the Ionian Sea of [[Greece]], two miles S of the equally small harbour of [[Ligia]] and just under three miles SW of the southern entrance to the Lefkas Canal.  Like its neighbour [[Ligia]] essentially a fishing boat harbour, it has a little more space on its long breakwater quay and it is usually possible for a visiting yacht to moor bows or stern-to using its anchor at some point along the quay.  However, there are mooring chains parallel to the quay in parts and care is needed not to hook them with your anchor.  The outer end of the breakwater quay is quite low and it can be difficult for some yachts to moor up there.  Shelter in the harbour is good in the prevailing winds but less so if there is anything E in the wind.  Strong easterlies can send a swell over the end of the breakwater.

Yachts moored on Nikiana quay

The small harbour of Nikiana lies on the NE coast of the island of Lefkas in the Ionian Sea of Greece, two miles S of the equally small harbour of Ligia and just under three miles SW of the southern entrance to the Lefkas Canal. Like its neighbour Ligia essentially a fishing boat harbour, it has a little more space on its long breakwater quay and it is usually possible for a visiting yacht to moor bows or stern-to using its anchor at some point along the quay.

Passages

Navigation

There are no dangers in the approach to Nikiana. The curved breakwater that encloses the harbour on the E side is conspicuous once close in, as is the taverna surrounded by trees at the root of the breakwater. If approaching from N, it should not be confused with the similar harbour of Ligia two miles to the N.

Communication

Also see World Cruiser's Nets.

Entrance

Lefkas is the nearest port of entry if arriving from N or Sami on Kefalonia or Vathi on Ithaca if arriving from S.

Berthing

There is usually space to be found somewhere on the breakwater quay for a yacht to anchor moor among the fishing boats and charter yachts or even to lie alongside for short periods. Depths are mostly around 4.0 metres, shoaling to 2.5 – 3.0 metres closer to the root. Holding is good in mud with some weed. There are mooring chains off much of the breakwater quay and it is necessary to lay out a minimum of 30 metres of chain to clear them. The outer end of the quay is quite low and not easy to moor to. Shelter on the quay is good in the prevailing NW winds and it only gets uncomfortable with fresh to strong winds from NE round to SE.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

None

Anchorages

Many yachts visiting Nikiana prefer to anchor off N of the harbour in settled weather and come ashore in the dinghy. Depths are 4.0 – 5.0 metres and the holding is good in mud and weed (once through the weed). Shelter is reasonable in the prevailing NW winds, but less good in NE and E winds.
