Marina of Numana from SW

Numana is a large, purpose-built harbour and leisure development situated on the Adriatic coast of Italy around 16 miles NNW of the port of Civitanova Marche and 10 miles SSE of the harbour of Ancona. The marina, which is owned by the municipality, provides nearly 800 berths for yachts of up to 25 metres. Depths here are relatively shallow (less than 3.0 metres) and the marina is unsuitable for deep draft vessels.

Weather

During the summer months the prevailing winds in the Adriatic are light to moderate coastal seabreezes. In spring and autumn, northerly winds are more frequent and can quickly rise to near gale force, especially in the northern Adriatic, where the much-feared “bora” is caused by high pressure over the mountains to the NE coupled with low pressure over southern Italy. Fortunately, the fiercest “bora” is normally to be expected in the winter months. Thunderstorms are occasionally experienced in spring and especially autumn and can be accompanied by violent winds of gale force and above. Luckily they are rarely long-lasting. In the southern Adriatic, the “scirocco”, a S/SE wind blowing up from North Africa which can last for several days, is more common. Unlike the “bora”, which can arrive without warning, a “scirocco” tends to build in strength over 24-48 hours, sometimes reaching gale force (especially in winter).

Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
  • Navtex weather forecasts covering the Adriatic are broadcast from stations at Roma, Trieste, Kerkyra (Greece) and Split (Croatia)

Navigation

The marina is protected by a long detached breakwater oriented NNE/SSW. The numerous hotels along the shore and the buildings of the village climbing up the hill behind the harbour are conspicuous from distance. Closer in the low detached breakwater is clearly identifiable. Entry to the marina is from SW, through the southern entrance. Note: if approaching from N, be aware that entry is forbidden through the northern entrance - it is for exit only. Depths in the entrance are 6.0 - 7.0 metres.

Berthing

Moorings at NW corner of Numana harbour

Try contacting Numana Marina on VHF channel 11 prior to entry. There does not appear to be any central organization of berthing in the marina; the various quays and pontoons are managed by concessionaires.

There are three options at present for visiting yachts:

  1. Italian Lega Navale, Numana Section
(Telephone: +39 071 9331363; Email manages a transit dock where yachts may berth for a maximum of 48 hours.
  2. Circolo Nautico Numana
(Telephone: +39 071 9331542; Email; Website manages the section of the harbour at the NW corner, under the Molo Nord. There are quays and pontoons where a transit yacht with maximum draft of 1.8 metres may berth. Water and electricity. Basic clubhouse. Toilets and showers. Wifi. Typical daily cost for 13 metre yacht: Euros 50.
  3. Yachts may also berth overnight outside the fuel station on the short pier at the southern end of the harbour (although only in settled weather and certainly not with any southerly winds).

Tourism

The town of Numana on the hill of Mount Conero above the marina has a few Roman remains but is not otherwise especially exciting. Like most of the harbours along this coast, there are some nice beaches near the marina (although they get very busy in summer). Numana is at the southern edge of the Parco Naturale del Conero, which has some good hiking trails. With transport, it is possible to explore some of the pretty mountain villages of the interior.
