Background
Peru (Spanish: Perú, Quechua: Piruw, Aymara: Piruw), officially the Republic of Peru is a country in western South America. It is bordered on the north by Ecuador and Colombia, on the east by Brazil, on the southeast by Bolivia, on the south by Chile, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean.
Peruvian territory was home to the Norte Chico civilization, one of the oldest in the world, and to the Inca Empire, the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century and established a Viceroyalty, which included most of its South American colonies. After achieving independence in 1821, Peru has undergone periods of political unrest and fiscal crisis as well as periods of stability and economic upswing.
Climate & Weather
The climate of Peru's coast is influenced by the (cold) Humboldt Current. This ensures that the coastal temperatures remain cool year-round with coastal fog a common occurance. The desert-like coastal region receives very little rain and the prevailing winds are (normally) light south or southeast.

- Keep a close eye for small fishing boats off the coast of Peru, some were not lit and hard to see on RADAR. Major shipping stayed about 12 miles offshore.

Arrival/Departure procedures
- Yachts are required to advise either of the stations at Paita, Callao or Mollendo well in advance of arrival. Call the Marine Authority (TRAMAR) on VHF or HF.
- After having entered territorial waters (200 miles), you are expected to proceed directly to an official "port of entry".
Note: It is very much easier to clear in at Callao with the assistance of the Yacht Club Peruano - contact them well in advance for assistance. Clearance into other "ports of entry" is extremely difficult (reported to be virtually impossible).
Immigration
- Visas are not required in advance by most nationals if only staying for up to 90 days.
- Crews of foreign yachts who intend to visit the interior or neighbouring country must insist on being issued with a tourist card on arrival. These tourist cards and visas can be renewed at the Ministerio del Interior, Paseo de la Republica, Av. 28 de Julio, Lima.
Note: Identification should always be carried on your person while in Peru. It is suggested that you carry a photocopy of your passport that has been notarised locally.
Customs
- Firearms, ammunition and animals MUST be declared on arrival.
- Exporting archaeological objects is strictly prohibited.
- Pets: All animals must have a valid Health Certificate signed by a licensed USDA accredited Veterinarian. The certificate must contain the name and address of the owner and complete identification of the animal (name, breed, sex and age) and must also show:
- That the animal(s) (3 months or older) were vaccinated against rabies
- Dogs were vaccinated (according to age) against parvovirus, hepatitis,, distemper and leptospirosis.
- Cats were vaccinated against Calicivirus, Rhinotracheitis and Infectious Panleucopenia (a sworn declaration by the importer must be produced). Further information is obtainable from Pet Travel Store.

Personal Notes
- We tried to contact any major ports via VHF 16 while cruising down the coast from Ecuador. We never made contact, however we kept a radio log with Position, course, speed, time and date of all attempts and or successful contacts.
We notified the Yacht Club Peruano in Callao prior to our arrival via email. About 15 miles out we notified TRAMAR, the port control on VHF 16/13 and once again when we arrived at the yacht club. Once we arrived at the yacht clubs mooring field, we contacted them via VHF channel 68. We were met by a launch and led to a mooring. We met the manager of the club, who was very helpful and walked us through the entry process. They do not get many visiting yachts here and the authorities are not accustomed with dealing with them.
The yacht club was very welcoming and fuel was available from their dock, or via jerry can from a local station. We were granted one week free stay.
