History and background

Port Albert is one of Victoria's oldest sea ports, established in 1841 by explorer Angus McMillan, who is commemorated with a monument at the roundabout at the northern end of town. The town's collection of historical buildings includes the Port Albert Hotel (licensed in 1842) which fronts the town's jetties and wharf, and the general store which dates back to 1856. The Gippsland Regional Museum, located on the corner of Wharf Street and Bay Street, features exhibitions and memorabilia of the town's maritime history.

Approach and Navigation

Enter between Snake Island and Clonmel Island (38° 44.6' South, 146° 39.6' East) and proceed northeast between the islands. Check hydrographic charts or use a good depth sounder. Various channels, submerged sandbars and offshore islands make entry to Port Albert somewhat tricky, so don't end up like the SS Blackbird!!

Berthing Options

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

  • Port Albert Yacht Club (no dedicated marina, social group only). Bay Street, Port Albert VIC 3971.
    PO Box 52, Yarram VIC 3971. Phone: 03 5183 2581, Email

Anchorages

Anchor away from the many yachts at moorings and paddle your tender up to the boat ramp. Running all the way in and tying up at the wharf may incur the ire of local fishing boats. You may get away with tying up at one of the empty marina bays for a day or two, but this is untested.

Offshore Islands and Groups

Various, mostly uninhabited. Port Albert is part of the 30,000ha (75,000 acre) Nooramunga Marine & Coastal Park and a centre for eco-tourism. Camping is permitted on Snake Island, but you'll need a permit (no fee required) from Parks Victoria. Sunday Island, between Port Albert and Port Welshpool, is privately owned.

Personal Notes

  • A charming, sleepy and rustic little fishing village, Port Albert (pop. 250) has an interesting history but these days doesn't come alive outside holiday seasons, when the many Melbourne residents who own holiday houses arrive.
Facilities include a wharf, marina and a ramp for trailer-sailors. Fuel is available 500 metres from the wharf at a petrol station which doubles as a general store. There are a couple of restaurants and an old pub, which also serves meals and may have rooms available.
The farming township of Yarram is about 12km (8mi) north of the town on the South Gippsland Highway, and has many more facilities including banks, supermarkets, real estate agencies, hardware stores and so on. Hitchhiking is probably the fastest way to get there. --Haiqu 02:21, 26 May 2011 (BST)
