Harbour of Porto Fossone from WNW

The tiny but expensive ‘marina’ of Porto Fossone lies 1.5 miles upriver on the Rio Adige, the entrance to which lies on the Adriatic coast of Italy, seven miles N of the entrance to Marina di Albarella and five miles S of the entrance to Chioggia, the southernmost access point to the lagoon of Venice. Depths at the river entrance are 3.0 metres but can be as little as 2.0 metres further upstream at low water springs. The river should only be entered on a rising tide close to high water and in settled conditions. Vessels of over 2.0 metres draft are advised to avoid the ‘marina’ altogether.

Weather

During the summer months, the prevailing winds in the Adriatic are light to moderate coastal sea breezes. In spring and autumn, northerly winds are more frequent and can quickly rise to near gale force, especially in the northern Adriatic, where the much-feared “bora” is caused by high pressure over the mountains to the NE coupled with low pressure over southern Italy. Fortunately, the fiercest “bora” is normally to be expected in the winter months. Thunderstorms are occasionally experienced in spring and especially autumn and can be accompanied by violent winds of gale force and above. Luckily they are rarely long-lasting. In the southern Adriatic, the “Scirocco”, a S/SE wind blowing up from North Africa which can last for several days, is more common. Unlike the “bora”, which can arrive without warning, a “scirocco” tends to build in strength over 24-48 hours, sometimes reaching gale force (especially in winter).

Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerized voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
  • Navtex weather forecasts covering the Adriatic are broadcast from stations at Roma, Trieste, Kerkyra (Greece) and Split (Croatia)

Navigation

The entrance to the Rio Adige is at/wiki/Porto_Fossone#Rio_Adige_is_atWorld icon.png Rio Adige is at [[Porto Fossone#Rio Adige is at|Rio Adige is at]] 45°09.835'N, 012°20.061'E . Entry should be made close to high water and only in settled conditions. Strong onshore winds make entry impossible. Minimum depths in the entrance are 3.0 metres, but nearer 4.0 metres at high water springs. Proceed with care upriver for 1.5 miles. Porto Fossone lies on the S bank of the river behind a floating wave break pontoon.

Berthing

Porto Fossone has around 140 berths on a catwalk with mooring posts and on a long pontoon. Depths on the catwalk are only adequate for small motor boats and visiting yachts should berth alongside on the pontoon, where there is space for about five yachts of up to 14 metres. Depths at the pontoon are 2.5 metres. Water and electricity on the pontoon, toilets and showers and a bar but no other services. Daily berthing charge for a typical 13 metre yacht (January 2011): Euros 110. Call on VHF channel 09 or telephone.
