Yachts moored in Postira bay

The harbour of Postira or Postire lies on the N coast of the island of Brac in Croatia, three miles E of the ferry port of Supetar.

It is a pleasant stop when cruising the N coast of the island in settled weather, and protection here is better following the construction of a new W breakwater and yacht quay on the W side of the harbour. However, but the harbour still becomes uncomfortable in fresh to strong winds from NW and N, from which it offers only partial shelter.

Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

For sources of weather forecasting, see Croatia.

Communication

Also see World Cruiser's Nets.

Navigation

The immediate approach to Postira is free of dangers. The end of the breakwater is marked with a white light tower with a conspicuous domed red top. Depths in the harbour are around 5.0 - 6.0 metres and on the new yacht quay 4.0 metres. Shelter is good in most conditions, but poor with any winds from NW or N. It is probably untenable in a strong bora.

Entrance

Split is the nearest all-year round port of entry. During the summer, Hvar, Vis and, if arriving from N, Primosten on the mainland are also ports of entry.

Berthing

Yachts now moor on the new yacht quay

Visiting yachts now berth as directed stern or bows-to on laid moorings on the new yacht quay on the W side of the harbour. Harbour staff will help with mooring. The quay here is of substantial construction, with strong stainless steel bollards and moorings for 21 yachts, most of which are supplied with two mooring lines. Depths at the quay are 4.0 metres along its whole length. The quay is sheltered by a new W breakwater, which offers reasonable protection from N and NW, although some swell still creeps in.

Alternatively, and if all mooring lines are taken, a yacht may be directed to lie alongside the inner side of the W breakwater, where there is space for 2-3 yachts (if the fishing boats are not occupying them).

Anchorages

Anchoring in the harbour is forbidden in view of the numerous mooring buoys. It is also no longer allowed in the bay W of the harbour. See Brac island page for alternative anchorages.

The smart new man-made beach at Postire

Postira is basically a working town with only a modest amount of tourism. For some people, that constitutes its main charm. However, tourism is looking up with the creation of a smart new bathing area on the NE side of the harbour.
