Concrete piers of Preveza Marina

Preveza Marina is situated at the town of Preveza on the Ionian coast of Greece, six miles NNE of the island of Lefkas. Although the marina has never been completed, it is currently possible to berth alongside the five concrete piers inside. Until recently, these were full of local boats or laid up yachts and it was invariably necessary to raft up (albeit for free) if you wished to moor here. In early 2012 a lease was awarded to Cleopatra Marina and further work is planned to develop the basin into a proper marina, with all the usual facilities. However, currently (August 2013) only a Portakabin office (opening hours 0830 – 1430 Monday - Saturday) is in place and a charge is now levied for berthing here. The typical daily berthing price in August 2013 was around Euro 1.20 per metre overall length. At present, water and electricity are included in the price, but there are as yet no other facilities. There are reputedly plans to install showers and toilets but nothing has started yet. Shelter here is excellent, although strong S or SW winds make some berths uncomfortable.

Marina radio contact

The marina does not keep listening watch on VHF.

Navigation/Approach

See Wiki entry for Preveza for details of the approach. The marina lies at the N end of the town quay, enclosed by the commercial quay on the E side and a short concrete jetty (formerly used as the customs quay) on the W.

Entrance

This marina is a port of entry/exit.

Berthing

Since the marina was not originally designed for yachts, the piers are too close to install laid moorings. At present (and for the foreseeable future) yachts berth alongside on both sides of the five concrete piers. Depths alongside the piers are mostly 2.5 – 3.0 metres. The piers are supplied with good, strong iron bollards to take lines. It is usually best to berth with bows facing W if possible, as the afternoon seabreezes tend to blow from NW. Shelter in the marina is generally good, although strong S and SW winds do send in some swell, which can affect the berths nearer the entrance.

Marina facilities

  • Marina office (Portakabin)
  • Water and electricity points
  • No other facilities as yet

Repairs/Yard

None, although contractors can be arranged to come to the marina. See Preveza entry for several other options on the Aktion side of the bay. There is a well-stocked chandlery, Tsoukas Marine, on the road to the W of the marina, plus another, smaller one 100 metres to the N. Tsoukas Marine can also exchange Camping Gaz bottles.

Security

None, apart from the marina staff (0830 to 1500 Monday - Saturday only).

Marina Location

The marina is located at the N end of the long waterfront of Preveza, between the commercial quay to the E and a large public square lined with cafes to the W. A large (and often noisy) funfair operates on land immediately N of the marina. There are numerous cafes and tavernas within five minutes' walk

Transport

  • Buses to local destinations
  • Long distance buses to Athens (6-7 hours) and Igoumenitsa for Corfu ferry (2-3 hours). Bus station 15 minutes by taxi from marina.
  • Car hire outlets along the road to W of marina.
  • Airport of Aktion is 15 minutes by taxi from the marina, with charter flights during the season to several European destinations.

Price

Current daily price for typical 13 metre yacht (August 2013): Euros 15.

  • Now that the marina is staffed, it's a good place to fill up with water, recharge batteries and stock up from the Preveza supermarkets (15 minutes walk). It's also considerably quieter than the town quay and a good refuge if strong S or E winds make the town quay untenable. --Athene of Lymington
