Propriano is a small fishing town of 3,100 population situated at the head of the Gulf of Vallinco, roughly half way between Ajaccio and Bonifacio.  An important port during the period of Genoese occupation, it was susbsequently overtaken by its larger fellow harbours of Calvi and Ajaccio and is today a relatively quiet backwater with a growing tourist trade.  The fishing harbour has been gradually converted into a small yacht marina with three basins sheltered by breakwaters.  It is a convenient stop-off point to await favourable winds for crossing the infamous Straits of Bonifacio.
