Background

Propriano is a small fishing town of 3,100 population situated at the head of the Gulf of Vallinco, roughly half way between Ajaccio and Bonifacio. An important port during the period of Genoese occupation, it was susbsequently overtaken by its larger fellow harbours of Calvi and Ajaccio and is today a relatively quiet backwater with a growing tourist trade. The fishing harbour has been gradually converted into a small yacht marina with three basins sheltered by breakwaters. It is a convenient stop-off point to await favourable winds for crossing the infamous Straits of Bonifacio.

Weather

Shelter in the Gulf of Vallinco is good, which can mislead unwary skippers into thinking that there are favourable conditions in the Straits of Bonifacio. It is important to check the forecast carefully before heading south.

Approach and Navigation

No dangers in the approach, but the space between the pontoons is small and leaves little room for manoeuvre.

Check-in facilities

The Port of Propriano can be called on VHF channel 09 or by telephone on +33 95 76 10 40. The harbour office is manned from 0730 to 2000 except for the lunch period of 1200 to 1400.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

The Port of Propriano has three basins capable of accommodating yachts on quays or pontoons, with a total of 80 berths allocated to visitors. Depths in the basins are from 3.7 to 6 metres. All the basins are small and there is limited space to manoeuvre. Water and electricity are available at all berths and there are showers and toilets. There is also a fuel station in the harbour.

Anchorages

There are several sheltered coves to the north side of the Gulf of Vallinco, although they would be uncomfortable with anything west in the wind and untenable in strong southerlies.

Offshore Islands

None.

Tourism & things to do ashore

The town itself has a number of 16th century buildings but is not in itself very exciting. Propriano is, however, a good base to leave your yacht and hire a car or scooter to visit the remarkable a Neolithic site of Filitosa, with its unusual carved menhirs and a later Bronze Age ‘torre’ structure with subterranean chambers. You can continue on from there to the charming hill town of Sartène, which is spectacularly sited and has a picturesque old quarter with narrow passages and stepped streets. From here, it is a short trip to the Neolithic alignements of Paddaghiu, an isolated and mysterious sitewhere almost 260 stones are set in a series of rows.
