Old Venetian harbour, Rethymno
Old town, Rethymno

Rethimno or Rethymno (Ρέθυμνο) is a large harbor and town on the N coast of Crete, 27 miles E of the harbour of Chania and 35 miles W of Iraklio. Within the port is a small Venetian harbour in a very attractive setting - which is however unsuitable for yachts - and a new harbour SE of it which offers berthing on pontoons for around 60-70 yachts. Shelter is good in all conditions, although very strong NE winds send in some swell. The old town of Rethymno is charming with numerous tavernas around the Venetian harbour and many old-fashioned stores in the town. It is usually, however, full of tourists during the peak summer months.

Berthing

The marina is now established in the new harbour at Rethimno and consists of a series of pontoons with laid moorings. All the pontoons have water and electricity, as do most of the surrounding quays. Visiting yachts should moor on the most northerly of the pontoons (pontoon C), where there are usually a few unoccupied berths. Alternatively berth on the outside of pontoon A at the marina entrance (where the shelter is, however, less good). Berths are supplied with two mooring lines, both buoyed and with pickup lines back to the quay. Note, however, that the mooring lines themselves are very thick and quite short, so that yachts over 13m will probably need to take a line through the chain riser in order to keep themselves off the pontoon if there is any swell running. There is a charge of €7 for water and €4 for electricity, though this seems to be only intermittently levied.

A free wifi network is available from the Port of Rethymno. There are WCs on the marina quay, which seem to be open only during the day. The reference in Heikell's Greek Waters Pilot to local youths using the marina quay for 'drag racing' appears to have been solved with the installation of security barriers.

Warning: With a strong northerly there can be a bad swell at the entrance of the harbor.

Provisioning

  • There is good shopping in the town

Eating out

  • The Taverna Castelo is quite delightful - Greek food with an innovative slant in a lovely setting, surrounded by oleander trees and shaded by a huge vine. It's at 27 Arabatzoglou Street, five minutes from the Rimondi Fountain. We had one of the best lunches we've had in Greece for around €28 (June 2009). Benny the friendly Albanian head waiter speaks German and excellent English. --Athene of Lymington

Transportation

There are daily, and in the summer several per day, flights (from Iraklio) and ferries to Athens.

Tourism

In town there is the Archaeological Museum, in an old Turkish building, and the Folklor Museum, in a Venetian building. A visit to the historic Arkady Monastery and its Museum is worthwhile.
