Rota harbour from the east

Rota is a small resort and harbour situated on the coast of Andalusia 10 miles SSE of Chipiona and 5 miles NNW of Cadiz. Founded by the Phoenicians, the town was later occupied by the Romans and subsequently the Moors until falling into Spanish hands with the expulsion of the Moors in the 13th century. The town’s impressive Castillo de la Luna (now the town hall) dates from this period. Today, Rota is a bustling holiday resort and fishing harbour and also an important Spanish/US naval base. Its harbour, which is shared with the fishing fleet, has a modern, 500-berth marina with all usual facilities.

Navigation

Provide any navigation notes especially any dangers or peculiar local conditions here. Arriving from the north, keep one mile offshore as you round Punta Candor to avoid shallow reefs extending along the coast for the final three miles up to the harbour. Arriving from the south, there are no dangers. The narrow harbour entrance is orientated NNE. Depths at the entrance are at least 4.5 metres. Once inside, shelter is good.
