Harbour of St Florent

St Florent is a pretty former fishing village on the N coast of Corsica, now turned into a yacht harbour. It lies at the head of its own deep bay west of the Cap Corse peninsula and under the brooding mountains of the Patrimonio wine district. The town dates from the 15th century, when the Genoese constructed a citadel here (subsequently rebuilt after the attentions of Admiral Nelson in 1794). It makes a pleasant and secure place to moor a yacht while exploring the nearby wine district or the wild landscape of the Cap Corse peninsula.

Navigation

Approach is straightforward once into the bay of St Florent. The church spire and circular citadel are conspicuous from some distance off and the breakwater of the marina will be seen once closer in. Entrance is from the west round the northern breakwater. Entrance is safe in most winds, though a strong northerly sends a swell down onto the breakwater and makes entry difficult.

Berthing

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

The marina of St Florent has a total of 790 berths, of which 80 are designated for visitors. In practice, however, space in here is tight in high season and it is wise to call ahead. Depths in the harbour range from 1.5 to 3.0 metres (5.0 metres in the outer harbour). Shelter is good from all directions. Yachts are normally directed to berths in the outer harbour, where there are laid mooring lines, water and electricity on concrete quays. Toilets, showers and launderette in the marina. Fuel to port of the entrance. There is also a slipway, 50T crane and a 20T travel hoist. Call on channel 09 for a berth or telephone +33 (0)495 370079. The capitainerie is open 0700 - 2100 (summer); 0800 - 1200 and 1500 - 1800 (winter).

Anchorages

Good anchorage outside the harbour at the head of the bay, but untenable in northerlies.

Tourism

The town of St Florent is pretty and relatively unspoilt, with pastel-coloured houses lining the narrow streets climbing up to its circular citadel. From the citadel, there are fine views of the bay and the mountains behind the town. A short walk out of town is the 12th century Pisan Cathedral of the Nebbio, now known as the church of Santa Maria Assunta. The interior houses an amazing glass cabinet with the mortal remains of St Flor, a 3rd century Roman soldier martyred for his faith, in a beaded costume. The atmospheric mountain village of Patrimonio is only a few kilometers inland, with its impressive church and numerous vineyards (try the Clos Massimi rose).

Grocery & Supply Stores

In the town.

Eateries

  • U Furnellu near the harbour is good for fish.
  • Lunch of panini and Pietra chestnut-flavoured beer is good at Bar L’Escale.
  • In Patrimonio, La Pergola is a lovely spot for lunch (try the gruyere, ham, avocado and crème fraiche salad).
