The small harbour of San Felice Circeo lies 32 miles SE of Anzio on the Tyrrhenian coast of Italy and about 25 miles N of the island of Ponza. The entrance is shallow (2.5 - 3.0 metres) and the harbour is only suitable for smaller yachts and in settled weather. It should be avoided with any swell running and in winds from S/SE.

Weather

Winds along the Tyrrhenian Coast of Italy are generally light in the summer months. The most notable feature is a SW sea breeze that kicks in late morning and blows at little more than Force 2 - 4 until the evening. Thundery conditions are not infrequent during early Spring and Autumn, and associated winds can sometimes reach gale force and kick up a substantial sea. In winter, gales can blow from both NW and S and entry to and exit from many of the harbours along the coast can become hazardous.

Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerized voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
  • Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at La Garde (Toulon), Roma and Cagliari (Sardinia)

Navigation

The towering bulk of Monte Circeo two miles W of the harbour is conspicuous from distance. Closer in, the long outer breakwater and the houses of the village are clearly visible. The harbour is entered from due E. The 500 metre long entrance channel is dredged through a huge sandbank and depths can change after severe storms. Usually the channel has depths of 2.5 - 3.0 metres only, so entrance should never be attempted with any swell running. The channel runs just N of a short pontoon installed by the Cooperativo Circeo, who manage the harbour, to reduce the swell inside. The channel is usually buoyed (but don’t rely on it). If in doubt contact the Cooperativo Circeo on channel 09 for advice on the depths.

Cooperativo Circeo manages 380 berths on pontoons in the harbour, of which 10 are for vessels in transit. Depths at the pontoons range from 2.5 to 4.5 metres. Maximum length of vessel in theory 22 metres (but draught is more to the point).

Tourism

San Felice Circeo lies at the southern extremity of the Parco Nazionale del Circeo, an area of coastal marsh habitat (formerly known as the Pontine marshes) rich in wildlife. Nearby are the Grotte del Circeo, a series of caves where Neolithic remains have been discovered. The high bluff of Monte Circeo above the village has the remains of the temples and walls of an ancient city.
