Santa Margherita harbour

Santa Margherita Ligure is a smart beach resort and harbour two miles N of Portofino and just over a mile SW of Rapallo in Italy. Formerly an important base for coral fishermen, the town’s waterfront is now an attractive jumble of terraced fishermen’s houses and luxury hotels and restaurants. The town’s busy harbour offers a convenient alternative to jam-packed Portofino and busy Rapallo for yachts cruising the eastern part of the Ligurian coast.

Weather

The prevailing winds along the western part of the Ligurian coast during the summer are a SW or SE sea breeze, which rarely gets up much above force 4-5. Along the eastern part of the coast, the winds tend to come more from W or NW and are again usually little more than moderate. While infrequent, gales are not unknown during the spring and early summer and are typically caused by depressions further west in the Golfe du Lion which bring strong N winds as they move further E. In winter, the tramontana, a strong N wind off the Alps, is more frequent, although the libecchio is a strong SW wind that can affect the whole of the Ligurian coast and blow for several days, causing heavy seas.

Sources for weather forecasts:

  • There is a continuous (computerized voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
  • Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at La Garde (Toulon), Roma and Cagliari (Sardinia)

Navigation

The harbour of Santa Margherita lies just under two miles N of Portofino, protected by a long breakwater extending NE from the southern end of the bay. A series of eight pontoons extend from the shore into the bay, providing berths for over 350 vessels. In practice, the pontoons are normally full of local boats and visiting yachts moor along the breakwater. Depths are from 2.0 metres at the root to 11 metres at the end. Shelter here is good in all winds except E round to SE, when the harbour is subject to an uncomfortable swell.

Call Porto di Santa Margherita on the VHF on your approach. Yachts in transit normally berth on the breakwater quay, where there are laid moorings. Larger yachts (up to 60 metres) will need to use their own anchors. Toilets and showers on the quay.

Tourism

The waterfront of Santa Margherita, while not as attractive as Portofino, is a pleasant place for a stroll. At the northern end is a small Genoese castle dating back to the 16th century. Inland from the castle is the elegant Villa Durazzo, the 17th century seat of the Durazzo family, now a museum, set in its own park.
