Tilos (Τήλος) or Telos is a fairly remote and off the beaten track island. It is not very picturesque but it is quiet and more true to its traditions than the more developed neighboring islands.

In the 1990's the mayor of Telos, a member of Greenpeace, banned all hunting on the island and declared it a wildlife refuge. Since then, there is an active environmental conscience on the island and it is known as the Green Island of the Dodecanese. The island has now been designated as a Special Protected Area under the European Birds Directive, since it hosts endangered species such as the Bonelli's eagle, Mediterranean shag and Eleanora's falcon. The island now manages the SPA itself, planting trees, rehabilitating natural springs and encouraging traditional cereal crops in order to protect the habitat for these species. Details of the programme, which is funded under the LIFE-Nature scheme of the European Commission, are available at the Tilos Information Centre 200m south of the harbour in Livadhia.
All approaches to Tilos are without danger but, with the meltemi there can be very strong gusts and the harbour should be entered with care. Once inside the harbour, shelter is good, although a slight swell can creep in during strong winds.
Berthing
There are two anchorages in Tilos, the small harbor of Livádia and a cove at the N of the island.
| text= Already one of the most yacht-friendly Greek harbours in the Aegean, Livadhia or Livádia is now even more so with the establishment in 2008 of ten laid moorings along the main quay. As a result, no anchoring in the harbour is now permitted. Yachts go bow or stern to the quay as directed by the friendly Dutch harbourmistress, Eddie, or – subject to ferry schedules – alongside the inside of the mole. Depths at the quay are just over 3 metres and alongside the mole between 6 and 7 metres. Water and electricity are available at all berths. The harbour gets very busy in July and August and it is wise to arrive early to be sure of a berth in those months. Once the harbour is full, yachts anchor off in the bay (although a swell sets in with moderate to fresh winds and with strong winds the anchorage can become untenable).
* Update August 2017, Approximately half of the 8 or so berths (stern to) have laid lines. Those closest to the town must anchor. Others go alongside on the outer mole and raft up dependent on conditions (i.e. harbour master will raft up if needed). The Harbour is run by the very capable "Stefanos" (you'll hear him before you see him). He has a football whistle! Very helpful, besides Greek, speaks English and French very well. And, does a very good job of organising everyone.
History
Telos has had an interesting history. It seems that the island was connected to Asia Minor and elephants roamed its land. When the island was separated from the mainland around 10,000 years ago, the descendants of these elephants evolved into a more compact size. Remains of these small elephants have been excavated.

According to the mythology, the island was named after Telos the son of the sun Helios and Alia. Alia got sick and the dutiful son came to this island to find herbs to cure his mother's sickness. After she was cured he built a sanctuary dedicated to Helios-Apollo and to Poseidon. He became its first priest.
In antiquity the island was fairly prosperous and had founded a colony in Sicily named Gela. Telos was a member of the Delian League. The island was famous for its export of perfumes. The poetess Erinna who was said to be a "female Homer" was from Telos. In the third century Telos was allied with Rhodes. In 226 BC there was an earthquake that destroyed part of its citadel, near today's Megalo Chorio. From 42 BC Telos came under the Romans.

During the middle ages Telos was known as Episcopi and was under the Knights of St. John from 1309 to 1522. It withstood several attacks by the Turks. Later Venetians and pirates raided the island. This continued as late as 1821 when the revolutionary Greek boats from Mykonos and Spetses raided it.

In 1912 Telos was occupied by the Italians, who called it Piscopi, and then in 1943 by the Germans who destroyed all of the island's livestock. Finally, in 1948, along with the rest of the Dodecanese, Telos was united with Greece.
Megalo Chorio
Near Megalo Chorio is the Venetian castle, the Kastro, built on top of the ancient acropolis. The town is pretty, with whitewashed houses. There is a small museum with the bones of the miniature elephants. On July 28 and November 8, there is a festival here with local dances.

A few kilometers N of Megalo Chorio at the beach of Ayios Antónios there are the petrified remains of human skeletons of sailors caught in the lava of the Niseros eruption of 600 BC.
Mikro Chorio
Along the road from Livathia to Eristos (Έρυστος), about an hour's walk, there is the deserted ghost village of Mikro Chorio. This is well worth a visit. There are two 15th century churches with frescoes. The village, which was the most populous in the island, was too remote from the sea and had no water. In older times people lived way inland because of the fear of the pirates, but as this fear receded the rational also went away. So, it was abandoned in 1950 and the inhabitants moved to harbor of Livádia. Now the only building that is not abandoned is a restored house that is being used as a bar/disco. It actually does look attractive. The marked "parking" area in this wasteland is kind of ludicrous. It is all very spooky!

A short distance from the village there is the cave where the bones of the pigmy elephants were found in 1971. These were supposedly the last elephants in Europe. They were killed around 4000 BC.
A secure harbour - now even more so with the laid moorings - on one of the most beautiful islands in the Dodecanese. It is a joy to see the efforts being made to preserve the unique environmental features of the island for the benefit of the endangered bird species that inhabit it. You go to your grave a poorer man if you've never seen an Eleanora's falcon hunting dragonflies on the wing ... --Atheneoflymington 11:04, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Mandraki (Μανδράκι) is the only yacht harbor in Rhodes. The large commercial harbor just SE of Mandraki is closed to yachts. Mandraki is a good all year round shelter but it is also very crowded, year round and it is dominated by several charter and day-trip companies that operate from here. If you do find a spot (sometimes you may have to tie on the second tier) beware of fouled anchors.

Rhodes_harb1.jpg

Some yachts anchor outside on the E of the quay and take a long line to the rocks. That arrangement although safe can be quite uncomfortable from the wakes of the never stopping ferries. I prefer to go to Lindos and visit the city of Rhodes by ground transportation.

The new large Rhodes Marina south of the commercial harbor opened in 2016 and can accommodate Yachts.
* MV Venturer, Mike and Laura have been in Rodos, Mandraki Harbour numerous times since 2006. Mike needs to get his Turkish visa from the Consul, due to his South African passport, as of 2009 no longer necessary, issued in Turkey. We love Rodos, its really alive and vibrant, yet magic and romantic. The people are friendly and helpful and the harbour/passport/customs people are always nice and agreeable, but Getting exit papers is a nightmare as the Port Authority and Customs/Passport control are at different ends of Mandraki, do it in Symi instead.
Only drawback is the Mandraki harbour which is always full in the season. One has to arrive there early, no later than 10-1100 hrs in order to find an empty berth, if you are lucky. Never on a Friday as that is when the charter boats change hands. Beware of trying to moor where the charter boats are you will be chased away. When pleasant weather the harbour can be quite nice, but when there is a swell in the harbour even the oldest seadog feels squeamish.
There are a few yacht chandlers (groceries) in Mandraki who deliver to your yacht. There is also Spanos (kind of Spar) a great supermarket out of town who deliver to the yachts. Take a taxi or bus No 7. --Summercruise 11:53, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
* S/Y Salty Dog: My first time in Rhodes and I thought of trying Mandraki before the expensive new marina. I was shown a space comfortable enough for the chartered Lagoon 39 and was instructed to use both anchor, but not more than 25m as the mooring chain starts then, and two mooring lines due to the meltemi blowing on our nose. Apparently Mandraki marina does not trust its own mooring lines... Charged a modest 25 euro, incl. unlimited water and electricity. Fuel was provided at reasonable price (1,59 euro) by tanker immediately. -- --User:Ioannis
Sými or Sími or Syme (Σύμη) used to be off the beaten track and its harbor Yialos, is a jewel of a town with colorful houses built up the steep slopes. Unfortunately this lovely island has been "discovered." Now it is an "in" place and in the summer it is crowded and the lovely harbor now sports the usual bars with their loud music. On the other hand, many of the abandoned houses have been restored. In the last few years, however, the level of tourism has been upgraded, featuring some upscale restaurants and less loud bars, along with more restorations.

Symi along with Kalymnos and Chálki is famous for its sponge divers and at the height of the sponge trace in the early 20th century was very wealthy. Sponge diving in Symi has been going on since ancient times.
History
According to the mythology the island was named after princess Symi, the daughter of the king of Rhodes Ialysos. She was abducted by Glaukos the famous builder of Jason's Argo who brought her to the island. Her descendants were renowned ship builders. According to another myth, the Titan Prometheus modeled a man from clay from the island. This angered Zeus so much, that he turned Prometheus into a monkey. Since then the word "simian" is connected with monkeys.

Pelasgian walls found in Chorio attest to the long history of the island. In the Iliad, Homer tells how Symi mastered three ships which were led by king [Nireus Nireus]. In later times the island was part of the Dorian Hexapolis (six cities) and dominated by Rhodes. The Romans fortified the acropolis at Chorio and the Byzantines converted it into a fort. Later this fort was renovated by the Grand Master of the Knights of St. John, Foulques de Villaret. During the knight period the island prospered.

When the Ottoman sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent, attacked Rhodes, the Symiotes avoided the attack by offering their most precious sponges for his harem. He granted the island some independence and made it into a free port. The island continued to prosper under the Ottomans and the islanders in turn sent to Istanbul sponges every year. After the Greek revolution, some of the privileges were withdrawn but the island still remained prosperous.

The island was occupied by the Italians from 1912 until the second World War. During this period because the Italians closed the island to the Asia Minor markets and because of the competition from steam ships, the fortunes of Symi declined. Its population dropped from 23,000 to 600.

On May 8 1945 the treaty granting all of the Dodecanese to Greece was signed in Symi, and the island became part of Greece in 1948. Today, with tourism and with wealthy Athenians and Rhodians buying and reconstructing it old houses, the island is regaining its former wealth.
Yialós is a very picturesque town with many colorful neoclassical buildings. Unfortunately, the Nautical Museum has been closed since the financial problems.

Nearby Chorio has many older houses. It can be reached from Yialós by climbing the 375 steps. At Chorio there is a Museum (open Tues -Sun, 10-2).

On top of Chorio is the Kastro, the site of the ancient and Byzantine acropolis. Within the Kastro there is a post-Byzantine church with some icons and frescoes.

The Monastery of Taxiarchis Michael Panormites
The Monastery of the Archangel (Taxiarchis) Michael at Panormites is famous throughout the Dodecanese. It is believed that when a seaman is in danger, wherever that may be, all he has to do is pray to Michael put some money in a bottle and toss it into the sea. Michael will protect the seaman and his boat while the bottle will eventually wash ashore here at Panormites. There thousands of bottles on display that have come from all over the world to attest this.
Niseros (Νίσυρος) or Nisyros, or Nisiros is an almost square shaped island with an active volcano whose caldera is about 4 km in diameter and is a "must visit"site. The island has an area of 41.6 km2 and a diameter of 8 km. Legend has it that Niseros was a large boulder which during the battle of the Titans, Poseidon removed from Kos and hurled at the Titan Polyvotes, whom he crushed. Niseros is remote enough that several traditional customs still prevail. If one is lucky, one can still come across musicians playing traditional music.
The approach to Pali should be from the north, avoiding the extensive shoals in the bay immediately east of the harbour. You are turning beam on to the prevailing wind and swell to enter and care is needed if a strong meltemi is blowing. The orientation of the harbour entrance was changed in 2007 from north to east, which improved the shelter inside dramatically. However, the new entrance currently has depths of only 3.0 – 3.5 metres, so entry could be tricky with any easterly swell running. In July 2010 a dredger was moored in the entrance, so the depths here may improve shortly.

Caution While approaching the small island of Yiali be aware that about 0.5 nM SW of the island there is an underwater reef.

Berthing
| text= Pali is the only harbour on the island suitable for yachts. Since the re-orientation of the harbour entrance in 2007, shelter here has improved significantly, the meltemi no longer sending in the uncomfortable swell of years past. The southern side of the harbour has been dredged and yachts can now moor either on the northern breakwater (about 10 spaces), or on the southern quay at the village (about 35 spaces); mooring is med moor w/anchor. All moorings have electricity and water.

Depths on the northern quay are about 2.75 metres. On the southern quay depths vary from 2.2 - 2.5 metres on the western arm (just east of the small motor boats) to 3.0 - 3.5 metres on the eastern arm (beyond the ‘elbow’ of the quay). Fishing boats moor alongside the eastern breakwater. There are water and electricity points on both the northern and southern quays (a charge of Euros 5 per day is made for each). Typical mooring charge for a 13 metre yacht is € 8 per night (June 2011) but there was no attendant in evidence (June 2011).

Important note: it has been reported as at March 2015 that the re-orientation of the harbour entrance has resulted in an unforeseen silting problem. Moor in front of one of the restaurants and they might allow you to have water from their tap (I was given more than 600 litres and had only breakfast for two). Someone from the municipality came in the evening turned on the water for an hour or so for two fishing boats and then closed it again. -- --User:Ioannis}}
Places to Visit
Caldera
The most interesting site to see on the island is the caldera. It is located about 30 km from Pali. The caldera is about 4 km in diameter and there are paths leading to several craters. They are spectacular! Wear good shoes because the ground is rough and hot.

Emborio
Greece_Nisyros_Emborio.jpg

Emborio (Εμποριό) is a small village on the main road leading to the caldera. Here is a small restaurant, the Balcony, which not only serves excellent food but its balcony affords the most breathtaking view of the caldera. There is a placard informing us that this was the exact spot where during World War II the Germans killed a local Greek officer and member of the resistance.

Nikia
The village of Nikiá (Νικιά) sits on the southern rim of the volcano and also has spectacular views down into the caldera. The village has a lovely main square with dazzlingly white buildings enfolding a black and white pebble mosaic. There are several restaurants offering lunch with a view. There is a steep path from here which winds past the monastery of Ioannis Theologos on the rim and down into the caldera itself.

There is a new and well displayed volcanological museum, well worth a visits.

The Town of Mandraki
Mandraki is an attractive town with a very well preserved Mycenaean fortress on the hill above the town, which is well worth the climb. Also worth a visit is the beautiful small 14th century monastery of the Virgin of the Cave, which was built over a natural cave on a crag at the end of village. The church inside has an impressive collection of icons.

Over Mandraki is a substantial 4th century BC castle. The castle is in excellent condition with Cyclopean masonry and many towers. It is definitely worth a visit.
* The harbour at Pali is vastly improved and is already a popular port of call for yachts cruising the Southern Dodecanese. However, it remains largely unspoilt and has not lost its charm --Athene of Lymington 15:22, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
