Starigrad harbour from W

The small harbour of Starigrad lies on the mainland coast of Croatia at the SE end of the Velebitski channel, near the entrance to the Paklenica National Park at the foot of the Velebit mountain range. A settlement since Roman times, the town’s main claim to fame today is as a base for exploring the spectacular gorges of the National Park just behind the town and for long-distance trekking into the Velebit mountain range to the NE. However, the harbour, like many along this coast, is quite open and does not offer good shelter. It is not a place to be in if there is any risk of a bora or, indeed, any fresh to strong winds from NW round to SW. In settled weather, however, it is a useful place to stop for a visit to the National Park.

Navigation

Starigrad is approached from NW, either via the Velebitski channel having passed around the northern end of the island of Pag or, if approaching from S, through the narrow but deep channel of Ljubacka Vrata at the SE end of Pag island. A bridge crosses the latter channel, connecting Pag with the mainland, and has an air clearance of 35 metres. There are no dangers in the approach to the harbour itself. Shelter is no better than reasonable in moderate winds from NE round to E but poor in all other conditions. The harbour is untenable in strong winds from NW and W.

Berthing

Visiting yachts can moor alongside on either side of the short jetty at the NW side of the harbour, wherever there is space. Depths along the jetty range from 1.0 metre at the root to 3.0 metres at the outer end.
