Uruguay (official full name in Spanish: República Oriental del Uruguay) is a country located in the southeastern part of South America. It is home to 3.46 million people, of which 1.7 million live in the capital Montevideo and its metropolitan area.
It is bordered by Brazil to the north, by Argentina across the bank of both the Uruguay River to the west and the estuary of Río de la Plata to the southwest, and the South Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. Its surface is 176.215 km² being by its territorial extension the second smallest country in South America, larger only than Suriname and the French overseas department of French Guiana.

Weather
The climate in Uruguay is temperate: it has warm summers and cold winters. The predominantly gently undulating landscape is also somewhat vulnerable to rapid changes from weather fronts. It receives the periodic influence of the polar air in winter, and tropical air from Brazil in summer. Without mountains in zones that act as a barrier, the air masses freely move by the territory, causing abrupt weather changes.
The coolest month is June, while the warmest is January. The rainfall is equally distributed throughout the year, but tends to be a bit more frequent in the autumn months. There can be frequent thunderstorms in the summer. Although snow is not very common, it snowed in 1913, 1918, 1930, 1962, 1963, 1975, 1980, 1989, 1991, 1992, and 2007. One of the coldest winter (from 1951) was 2007: Tºjuly average 7,6°C Montevideo-Carrasco airport , Tºjuly average 6,8°C Florida city.
National extreme temperatures sea level are, Paysandú city 44.0°C (01-20-1943) and Melo city -11.0°C (06-14-1967)
Note that the winds are easterly in the Rio de la Plata estuary in summer and that strong SW winds (pamperos) blow between June and October.

- Isla de Flores
- Small island 11 nm E of Montevideo. Has a pier on the north side of the west end.
- Access is restricted, authorization to land has to be requested 1 day before of the planned trip at the PNN office in the YCU, Puerto del Buceo.
- Isla de Lobos
- Small island 4.5 nm SE of Punta del Este. Access is forbidden, it's a nature reverse for marine mammals.

Entrance
Arrival
Call "Control Maritimo" on VHF16 (or 9 or 11) before entering any Uruguayian port and report your current position and destination.
First visit the Coast Guard (Prefectura Naval) who MAY complete all your entry requirements, or may direct you to Customs and Immigration to complete formalities. It is prudent to have many copies of your necessary documentation and a "Safety Certificate" will make things easier.

When departing, a letter obtained from the Hidrografia office, confirming that all fees have been paid, is necessary.

Customs
- All firearms and ammunition MUST be declared on arrival.
- PETS: A valid veterinary certificate ie required, stating that your pet is healthy, free of parasites and free of any disease that is communicable to humans. The pet must have been vaccinated for rabies at least 30 days prior to travel but no more than 1 year prior to travel. The Rabies Certificate must accompany the Veterinary Health Certificate. Dogs must be treated for tapeworm Echinococcus Grandosus with Praziquantel at 50 mg per 10 kg of live animal weight. The treatment must have been administered more than 72 hours and less than 30 days prior to arrival in Uruguay. A Veterinary examination must occur within 10 days of departure to Uruguay. Immigration
Visitors are normally allowed a three month stay in Uruguay. Passports must be valid for 6 months beyond the expected stay in Uruguay. (Carry a certified copy of your passport at all times)
Visas are required by nationals from Albania, China, Egypt, Estonia, Guyana, India, Morocco and Russia. Citizens of Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Romania should check with their embassy for the latest requirements.
Note:
- You can purchase (at very reasonable cost) a Tarjeta Turistica, a card which covers medical and dental treatment, free repatriation in case of illness and legal insurance, from the Department of Tourism.
- If you want to extend your stay in Argentina, then Colonia is a good place because upon arrival you are granted a new 90 day tourist visa for either country.
Health and Security
Health
- Dengue Fever is a high risk - take precautions.
- Hepatitis A vaccination is recommended. Take precautions against mosquito bites because of a high risk of dengue fever.
- It is advised to drink bottled water
Security
Unlike its South American neighbours, crime is not a serious problem in Uruguay. Like anywhere, however, sensible precautions should be taken. That being said, Montevideo provides the highest opportunity for a run-in with pickpockets.
