More notes about the marina

The small basin of Venezia San Giorgio is situated at the N end of the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, half a mile SSE of St Mark’s square and the Palazzo Ducale in Venice. Undoubtedly the yacht basin with the best views in the city, it has 70 berths for yachts up to 15 metres. The berths are all under the management of a private club, the Compagnia della Vela Venezia, and berthing is only permitted when members are away from their berths. There are no facilities in the basin.

Marina radio contact

You can try calling Compagnia della Vela Venezia on VHF channel 11 or 16. It is wise, however, to make an advance reservation by telephone or e-mail, since the club HQ is in San Marco on the other side of the canal.

Navigation/Approach

Access is via the Porto di Lido, the principal (and busiest) entrance to the lagoon. As the deepest channel, with depths of over 10 metres, it is also the one used by ferries and large commercial vessels. The ends of the N and S breakwaters are identifiable by conspicuous black and white and red and white painted structures. A fairway beacon is situated around 2.5 miles SE of the entrance, from where a course of 300 degrees brings you safely through the entrance. The safe channel is also indicated by port and starboard markers. The channel is dredged to over 10.0 metres. Entry is best around slack water, since the tides can reach 4.0 knots at springs. Beware of cross-currents. Once through the entrance, follow the channel, which is marked with posts, as it curves S then N for about 3.0 miles, leaving the islands of La Certosa and Sant’Elena to starboard. The basin of Circolo Compagnia della Vela will be seen behind a long breakwater at the N end of the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, which is identifiable by a tall copper-topped belltower. The basin is entered from the W end (entry from E is impossible as this entrance is spanned by a footbidge).

Berthing

Berths in basin of Compagnia della Vela Venezia, San Giorgio

No berthing assistance usually available. Yachts berth either bows-to the breakwater (in which case land access is via the footbridge at the E end of the basin) or the quay opposite, both with lines to mooring posts. Depths at the berths range from 2.2 - 2.4 metres.

Marina facilities

High-quality toilets and showers available at the Club facilities, which are about 100 meters away from the docks.

Excellent wireless internet included in the price, available from the moorings.

Repairs/Yard

None.

Security

Good (24hrs).

Marina Location

The marina is just across the canal from St Mark’s.

Transport

Vaporetto No. 2 takes you directly to St Mark's square, no intermediate stops. Runs from 5am to past midnight, every 15 minutes or so, more often during business hours.

The "N" night vaporetto runs year-round from 1am to 4am, hourly, but you must request the stop by pressing a button prior to entering the waiting platform, if departing San Giorgio, or by asking the conductor on board, if arriving from Giudecca or from San Marco.

Price

Provide price information. (If possible add a link to the marina's pricing page.)
