The district of Cavallino-Treporti on the E side of the lagoon

The busy resort district of Cavallino-Treporti, situated on a long promontory protecting the N side of the Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic, is second only to Venice Lido as a beach destination, with mile after mile of golden sands extending as far as the Sile River and the district of Jesolo to the NE. On its western, lagoon side there are two small marinas with good depths where yachts of up to 50 metres can find a berth in depths of up to 6.5 metres.

Weather

During the summer months the prevailing winds in the Adriatic are light to moderate coastal seabreezes. In spring and autumn, northerly winds are more frequent and can quickly rise to near gale force, especially in the northern Adriatic, where the much-feared “bora” is caused by high pressure over the mountains to the NE coupled with low pressure over southern Italy. Fortunately, the fiercest “bora” is normally to be expected in the winter months. Thunderstorms are occasionally experienced in spring and especially autumn and can be accompanied by violent winds of gale force and above. Luckily they are rarely long-lasting. Fog is a further hazard often encountered in the lagoon of Venice, especially in the early and late season.

Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
  • Navtex weather forecasts covering the Adriatic are broadcast from stations at Roma, Trieste, Kerkyra (Greece) and Split (Croatia)

Navigation

The marinas of Cavallino-Treporti are approached via the Porto di Lido World icon.png 45°25.18′N, 12°26′E. The Porto di Lido is the principal (and busiest) entrance to the lagoon, giving the most direct access to Venice and Cavallino-Treporti. As the deepest channel with depths of over 10 metres, it is also the one used by ferries and large commercial vessels. The ends of the N and S breakwaters are identifiable by conspicuous black and white and red and white painted structures. A fairway beacon is situated around 2.5 miles SE of the entrance, from where a course of 300 degrees brings you safely through the entrance. The safe channel is also indicated by port and starboard markers. The channel is dredged to over 10.0 metres. Entry is best around slack water, since the tides can reach 4.0 knots at springs. In the entrance, keep to the N side of the channel and follow the NE channel (marked with mooring posts) round Punta Sabbioni rather than the SW one which leads to Venice itself. The marinas are both on the starboard side of the channel around one and two miles NE from the entrance respectively. For directions to the marinas basins, see links below.

Berthing

Yachts visiting Cavallino-Treporti have two principal berthing options in marinas capable between them of berthing a total of 330 vessels. The options are listed from S to N.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

  • Marina di Lio Grando World icon.png 45°27.24′N, 12°26.04′E lies around one mile up the channel from the Porto di Lido in a quiet residential area. It offers 200 berths for yachts up to 40 metres in maximum depths of 5.0 metres. Click on link for full details
  • Marina Fiorita World icon.png 45°25.88′N, 12°22.03′E lies a further mile NE up the channel on the E side of a major fork in the channel where it curves round the N side of the district of Treporti. The marina has 160 berths for yachts up to 50 metres in maximum depths of 6.5 metres. Click on link for full details.

Anchorages

Port regulations prohibit anchoring in the urban and port canals in the lagoon of Venice, owing to the large number of electrical and other cables criss-crossing the lagoon bed. This restriction does not apply to anchoring in a way that does not impede navigation in the "suburban" lagoon canals.

The Canale Gaggian (di San Lorenzo) anchorage lies directly in front of Marina Fiorita (across from, and well out, of the main navigational channel).
